Picked this up on a whim the other day. Very little info on line for this gun. Looks to be fired very very little. Guy advertised it as a safe queen. So may not have been fired since factory. Does have a very faint turn ring. Now I am curious as to it worth and scarcity.

Of the original SP101 revolvers (6-shot, windage-only adjustable sights), your 4-inch full-lug model was the most common.

They also made a 4-inch half-lug, and a 2-inch(?) snubby. Those two are a little harder to come by. I have accumulated a complete set, just by stumbling upon them individually over the years.

I gave maybe $400 for my full-lug about two years ago (don't have my records in front of me). It was NIB, or possibly LNIB.

It belonged to a local gun shop owner who has sold out, and is slowly divesting his collection. He's been a great guy to do business with, and it's one of very few firearms I own that has a special/sentimental connection with, beyond monetary value.

Now I've got Jim's SP101, in .22LR. Perfect! ❤️

Side note: when I bought my half-lug probably 20 years ago, it was FILTHY. I suspected that maybe that shop was trying to sell a used gun as new… so I politely questioned him. He went to the vault and brought out another four of them… all equally filthy! 😂

Maybe Ruger was test-firing with Remington Thunderduds! 🤭

I had to look at my records a bit. I have a full lug one like that. But my records do not have the "X" in my list. I'll double check my factory letter for it. The "X" stands for the full sized standard frame that is long enough for the .357 & other calibers. Maybe mine's a "variation!"

Oh,, I value mine at $550.00 currently.

I'm not with them right now… but here are a couple online examples I was able to dredge up.

Half lug (for sale, no less!😂):

Snubbie:

What I recall of the "X" is that was used when the frame was "eXtended" so that the .357 Mag version could handle longer bullets. The original SP was just offered in .38 Special, then subsequently in .22 LR and 9mm. Then the .357 came along but with the 125grain bullet restriction because you couldn't close the shorter cylinder with longer projectiles. There was a significant stock of shorter frames on hand, so they were used up on shorter cartridge models for several years, then the extended frame became standard.

It is a little hard to read, but the two-line caliber marking above says:

.357 MAGNUM CAL.
125 GR. BULLET

I did a quick check of the .22 & my .32 SP's last night. I did NOT use my calipers to actually measure each one. That'll come later. But my letter doesn't have the "X" as seen on the box shown above. Makes me wonder a bit. My .22 was made in 1999.

Short and long (eXtended) frames appear to have been made (cast) side by side for close to 200,000 ser. numbers. In my opinion, way too many for a "significant overstock" of short frames when the long frame was introduced.
The 6 shot .22LR, in the 3 barrel variations, by model number, were all made in both the short frame and long frame. I believe the 2" long frame is the least common, followed by the short frame 2".
Then, of course, there are the factory high gloss versions which I think are very rare.

So if I run across these what would I expect to pay?
I have my 2.25" valued at $900 and the half lug 4"valued at $800. I got them both in 2007 for $433 and $380 respectively. My values are likely a little out of date, I can't recall when I last adjusted them. I would guess that the 2.25" gun might fetch $1K today, and maybe $850 for the half shroud.

I measured the length of my KSP-241 cylinder and the OAL was 1.565. My .32 has a OAL of 1.584 and my Kelly special has a OAL of 1.579.
So,, just a small difference,, but enough to warrant a different model marking.
