Been working on my newly acquired Hy Hunter .357 Magnum. While handling the gun, it felt considerably heavier and more massive than my Rugers. So decided to get out my New Model .357 Blackhawk, now fitted with a Super Blackhawk grip frame.
It dawned on me that the gun felt heavier because it is a .357 Magnum while I've been accustomed of late to 4 3/4" or 4 5/8" barreled .44s and .45s, both on the medium frame. Certainly it'll be more massive.
But, compared to my Ruger New Model BBlackhawk, there is really not much difference. I removed the cylinders and there is scant difference in diameters. Length not so, as the Ruger cylinder is considerably shorter, though slightly longer through the ratchet/cylinder bushing O.A.L. The Ruger has a much greater barrel protrusion than the Hy Hunter.
The Ruger feel much better in dry-firing, with its wider trigger and gentler hammer fall. The Hy Hunter has a good trigger, but that mainspring sure drives the hammer forward. Haven't been able to fire them side-by-side yet, the Ruger is sighted in, while the Hy Hunter has not yet been sighted in, shooting about six inches low at fifty feet.
