I have a Ruger 77 RS serial # 70-22222 in 7mm mag , it is a hollow bolt, the bolt # and serial # match. Does anyone know of an earlier hollow bolt?

John,

Welcome to the RugerForum! As I stated before, this is the lowest number I've heard of for a Hollow Bolt. should be interesting to see if a lower number turns up.

I have M77R 25-06 sn 70-38837 and M77S 7x57 (now yours) sn 70-39514.

The lowest number I've had M77R 7 Mag sn 70-26522. Also had years ago M77RS 7 Mag sn 70-38085, M77V 25-06 sn 70-31991, M77RS 30-06 sn 70-34241, M77R 7 Mag sn 70-38877 and have seen M77R 7x57 sn 70-87552 and M77V 25-06 sn 70-31786.

Let's see some more sn's!

I had a RS #70-23XXX in 7 Mag which was the lowest I knew of. Check and you will note that the rear sight is about 1/2" closer to receiver than rifles made just a little later. For that time, a 3x9(40) Leupold would not clear the rear sight base. Another RS 7Mag HB I had was 70-44XXX and the rear sight was farther forward!

That is the earliest hollowbolt I've ever noted. The earliest flatbolt long action I have in the reference is 70-14170. Because yours is with sights, and those didn't move through Ruger's inventory nearly as fast as the barreled actions without sights, it wouldn't surprise me if your barreled action sat there for a little bit before it was finally manufactured. Hence the reason it has a hollow bolt.
