Hi there.

I have a friend that recently bought a Mauser M66 rifle with a Weaver rail fitted to it. Because of the action design the scope will sit very far forward as on the Gunsite Scout rifle. I would appreciate any suggestions on scopes that would work well on the rifle?

Thanks.

Pieter.

Pistol scopes tend to have longer eye relief than rifle "scout" scopes but I've always used them with no issues. Any Leupold or Burris will work fine, I tend toward Weaver 2.5 to 8X because it's sturdy, compact and clear at a good price. I have about 10 of them on various handgun barrels and they work fine.

Depending on the location of the weaver rail, you may want to try a scope designed for forward mounting on a rifle, i.e a Scout scope...which are referred to as being IER scopes (intermediate eye relief) or you may want to try numerous scopes which are intended for pistol use, these are usually referred to as EER scopes (extended eye relief)

I have numerous scout rifles including the Steyr and Ruger GS as well as the Frontier rifle and I prefer the Leupold Scout Scope on these over a pistol scope but the choice is up to you....and your budget.

Good luck

I vastly prefer the Leupold Scout Scope over a EER/LER pistol scope. I have also had great luck with the Aimpoint T1/H1/R1 on Scout Rifles.

Thank you guys, I appreciate the information.

I will pass on the advise I got from you. He will now know what to look for. I have not looked at the rifle in detail and do not know exactly how far forward the rail was installed. I think Leupold would be a good option as it should be available from quite a few dealers around.

Thanks again.

Pieter

I wanted to keep the peep sight on and use a traditional scope as they pick up available light better than a scout scope in the pre-dawn legal hunting time.

I mounted a Redfield, hovering above the peep sight, using a LaRue LT-139 mount. I reverse mounted it, and it works great.
