Ruger Competition MK II Ammo

I just returned my MK II to Ruger for repair. Cost me just the $30 shipping and they replaced a lot of parts and had it back to me less than 2 weeks from when I gave it to FedEx and that included the July 4 holiday, so I can't say enough good about their customer service. Apparently some of the mods some previous owners had made had deteriorated so that the gun was unsafe, and Ruger returned it to near new at no charge. And the trigger still breaks at 2-1/2#.

That said, I am confused about one comment on the paperwork when the gun came home. Basically, they recommended NOT using lead bullets and recommended only using copper washed bullets.

Can anyone tell me why they would make such a recommendation? I've always thought that lead bullets were easier on the barrel.

Easier on the barrel for wear, harder on the barrel for leading. Copper has drawbacks too since I've never found a copper bullet in the 40gn weight yet.

I've been thinking the same thing. The paperwork back from Ruger said "After repair, pistol was function fired 40 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity 40gr CPRN, without malfunction". I went on the CCI web site and they do list two 40gr CPRN loads, but both are HV (Mini-Mag HV and AR Tactical) but I could not find and Standard Velocity CPRN.

Maybe I'm worrying too much. I'm not that good a shot anyway, so ultimate accuracy is not necessary I've found that the gun likes Federal Champion 38 gr CPHP that used to come in the 525 round Value Pack. I guess today I'll have to look for Game Shok ammo from Federal to get copper plated, once I run out of my stock.

I shoot CCI 40 grain lead from my MKII Competition target with no issues at all. .500 to.595 inch groups at 25 yards with my hands rested on the bench. Federal Auto Match is a bit less accurate, averaging .675 to .790 inches. The only issues I've experienced using waxed lead ammo in any of my Ruger pistols is leading with high velocity loads. Federal 510 40 grain leads a little, CCI Blazer fouls the bore so badly that strips of lead come out during cleaning.

The best lead remover for .22 bores is Kano Kroil. Soak a couple of patches and run them though the bore. Leave the Kroil sit in the bore for an hour or two then follow with tight fitting dry patches. Any lead will pop loose and be pushed out the muzzle.
