Okay, I've never had an AR; never even fired one.

How is this $600 Ruger AR different than the Ruger AR local stores were selling for twice that a couple of years ago?

Are you asking about the difference between a Ruger AR556 and a Ruger SR556 or an AR556 and other ARs out there?

The "new" one is direct impingement. The SR is piston operated.

Not quite... the gas block and barrel nut / delta ring assembly are proprietary.

Just read some of the write-ups. Looks like a decent little basic rifle; I can't build one up for the going price, much less give myself a warranty. Don't need one (more) but it's tempting.

I suspect they're going to sell a bunch of them; plus it will probably push the Mini-14 into oblivion.

The AR-556 is certainly not going to help Mini-14 sales as the dealer cost is $160 less. Had the AR-556 been out 2 years ago, it may have wiped out the completion. Now, it's going to give all of the other manufacturers heartburn as AR sales are down. It's hard to build one for the price of an AR-556. Bob!!

I'm hoping that the AR-556 is going to drive down the cost of the Mini-14. After so many years you would think that Ruger has recuperated all it's development costs for the Mini and could afford to price it lower. They just need to get rid of all those AR like tactical models and stay with the basic wood and polymer stock models.

I just wish that even ONE of our local dealers from big box stores to
mom and pop stores would GET one in I could buy!!!!!!! A local friend
who is relocating his business to a new store from a building on has
property has some on order and has had since the dealer world first
got the announcement from Ruger and that's several months by now
and NADA has shown up.

Picked one up last Thursday here in SoCal. It has the bullet button for California. It looks well made and the finish is very good on this model. Haven't had a chance to break it in yet, hoping this next weekend. IMO, this rifle is very tight. No rattles that I can hear.

I have a much older Colt Sporter HBAR, and in comparison that one was much looser. Still was a tack driver though.
