I got a sale flyer from the big "C" and see they are offering the New Ruger AR-556 for $629.99. Good Deal? Good Rifle? Any Issues? Should I be standing in line when they open on Feb 5th?

Welcome to the forum!

We seem to think the AR556 will sell on the street for $550 when regular distribution finally happens. If I found one locally tomorrow for $629 I would be the first on my block with one. Impatience is expensive.

WAYNO.

If I were in the market for another entry level AR, the Ruger would be a top choice.

Local dealer had two when they were first intro'd, sold both for less than $600.

If you want it.... I wouldn't let $30 or even $50 slow you down too much.

I got mine after being on a waiting list for almost 4 months and paid $629 OTD
and am very satisfied, I'd get one ASAP were I you, mine is tight and well made
plus the Ruger method of securing the delta ring is a definite improvement on
the traditional method that usually either requires a third hand/help to remove
the handguards without a specialized tool that just costs more money. If you
have any other AR pattern rifles the tool is very welcome however and ought
to pay for itself with far less nasty language and busted knuckles.

Wayno....Thanks for the welcome,

Im a very seasoned shooter, LE background, and have many of the "Black Rifles" mostly Sigs in .308 & 2 S&W in .223/556. What I'm looking for is an entry level AR for the grand kids to begin with and not have to worry about them handleing my high $ Sigs. I was suprised when I saw the flyer and was not aware that Ruger had this out. Just looking for a plane one to leave stock and not trick it out.

You could pick this one up for 569 plus 27 shipping and say your dealer gets another 20 totals up to 616 or maybe just go to Cabelas and give them the 629

The Cabelas thing that has me looking is I have 200.00 in Xmas gift cards and Cabelas CC that has enough points to walk out with out leaving any green at the register. I do love and have never had any issues with the many 10-22's I have, just was shocked when I saw this on the front page of the flyer, didn't know Ruger offered the entry level AR.

There are a bunch on GunBroker, $609 delivered with no CC fees is about the best deal I've seen lately.

From what I have read on this and other forums, seems folks are having to use channel locks or strap wrenches to undo the screw on delta ring. The original has worked well for over 50 years... don't really see why Ruger felt the need to try to change it.

Bearcat, you are correct and I experienced the same issue with mine the first
time I tried to rotate it, I used a strap wrench as others have and after the
initial use, I've not needed it again. I suspect that during assembly by Ruger
they have used way too much force in seating the ring the first time, but
since I "broke" the new ring loose with the wrench, it is finger easy to rotate
now.

Got mine last fall during an Oktoberfest sale that was hosted by Ruger and some other vendors. It was $599. So far it has been a fun little rifle.

Well....I picked it up today, impressed on first look over. I will need to spend some time cleaning it as there is enough oil on it to run a 12L diesel from Florida to Alaska!!!

Will post range report next week

Was going to cash in on that deal tomorrow, but a call to Hamburg told me they were out and that they would not get any more before the sale ends.

:(

Aqualung

Finally got it to the range today, shot 1" groups at 100 YDS off steady rest, feeding it 556 55gr FMJ PMC, using the stock iron sights. I'll keep it:)

I got mine today.

Also, not sure everyone is aware, or maybe I got one that is different from all of the others, but the AR556 has a non shrouded firing pin and AR15 style bcg, not a M16 bcg:

I got it Froglubed up and ready for the range.
