Got in a little range time this afternoon. After cleanup, these two wanted to pose for a picture. First is a new favorite shooter; a 1954 pre-model 27 5-screw .357, 6" with Patridge front sight I bought on S&W forum a couple of weeks ago. It has the matching numbered magnas with it but I put these presentation targets on it for shooting. Super-accurate old sixgun.

Next is a custom old model flattop .44, shortened to 4 5/8", color-cased by Turnbull, steel Old Army gripframe, mesquite grips. Custom work by John Gallagher. She's a handful with the 290 grain hard cast SWCs I was shooting this afternoon.

6Gunsonly did your 44 begin life as a Magnum, or did your convert a .357? Either way I'd be proud to say it was Mine.

That one was already a flattop .44. It was "cosmetically challenged" so I had John shorten the barrel, had Turnbull C/C the frame, put on an Old Army gripframe, then John reblued it and installed a locking basepin. The mesquite grips are from a maker in Texas whose name escapes me at the moment.

I have a converted flattop .357, now a .44 Special.

Gallagher did this one as well. Bored the cylinder, black powder chamfer on the front edge, used a take-off factory Ruger .44 barrel. Retained the alloy XR3 gripframe in the interest of weight-saving on this one. Locking base pin, buffalo horn grip panels. Likes 17 grains of 2400 with a hard-cast 250 grain Keith SWC. Holster is an El Paso Saddlery Tortilla.

I agree about the older 3-screws. I will hunt far and wide for one before buying a new model Ruger.
