I'm going to buy a Ruger American in 308. Just interested in short range shooting, 100 yards tops. I know nothing about scopes. What would be a good one to get here? Also does the gun come with rings?

Check out this review of the rifle. I think he talks about/reviews it with a scope.

Great little hunting rifle...you're going to love it with any decent scope. Mine did not come with rings but I heard there are some combo deals that do. Very common rings and easy to come by.

I would put a Sightron SI 3-9x40 on it. They are affordable and the optics is very good for the price. The 3-9 would give you some flexibility later on if you decide to stretch that 100yrds. From what I have heard, they have a good warranty on their products.

The new Redfield scopes are a great value. They are made by Leupold now, and sell for about $100 less than the comparable Leupold or Nikon. I would go with a 3-9 or 2-7 for general use up to 200yds.
