ruger american 22 bolt issue

Just unboxed my ruger american rifle 22. I put the bolt in and had to use a little more force than I would think I would have to. Once in I noticed I can't can't get it to lock down unless I take my other thumb and press on the back of the bolt and with my other hand force it down in the locking position (ready to fire). With out pressing on the the back of the bolt I don't think it will go into the locking position, at least I'm to scared to press harder than I have... should I get ruger to take it back or should I try cleaning and lube it and force the chamber down a few rounds to see if it loosens up? Any other fixes anyone knows of?

You should strip, clean and oil the firearm before trying to fire it. The guns are covered in preserving compounds, not lubricants, when packaged.

I would clean it for sure and see if it loosens up. I have an american in 22wmr and it closes somewhat hard as compared to my marlin .

It did loosen noticeably... to lock down is still stiff but much more manageable

I would contact Ruger and . . . ask . . . if they have an opinion.
Tell them what you have done and what the results are, then listen.

If it IS a problem, they will take care of it. If it is NOT a problem, they
will most likely have suggestions on how to handle the situation. 8)

The short throw on the Americans are the reason for a little stiffer bolt.
