Me and my dad hunt in north western Arkansas in an area frequented by bears. Last year we had several of our game cams pick up pictures of large bears frequenting our favorite hunting grounds. I normally carry my Ruger Police Service Six in 357 Mag in the woods for just such an occasion. My dad got an itch and decided to purchase one of the Ruger Alaskans in 44 mag. Once he got it in I decided to surprise him with a great present for Christmas. I perused the web for a while and came across Earl Southard of Trailmaster Holsters, a gentleman in Montana who specializes in holsters for the large frame Ruger revolvers.

The cost was low in my opinion and the quality was very high. I would highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a great holster.

After I called Mr. Southard he emailed me a catalog that had a variety of options. I opted for the shell holders on the outside of the holster, my dads initials on the front face, the barbed wire detail around the outside edge and the thumb break retention strap at the top. It was very easy working with him and the end product turned out great. If you are looking for a holster for yourself, or someone else this would make a great gift. Give him a shout, you will be glad you did.

A +10 for Earl. You won't find a more personable person that Earl. He has built numerous holsters for me and I have been more than happy with all of them. He also builds holsters for the GP100 and SP101 and the full size Redhawk.

Here are a couple of Alaskan holsters he's built for me. :D :D

I forgot to mention that Earl offers a great option that should be considered,.. a shoulder support belt. The Alaskan is very hefty and can weigh down a person very quickly. My dad is a fairly skinny fellow and he needs help keeping his pants up without a heavy gun weighing him down. This shoulder holster would definitely help with that situation. I have not ordered it for him yet, but from the photos that Earl sent me it looks like a very well made rig. it looks like it has elastic built into it to help when you are bending and stretching. That would be very helpful when climbing a tree stand or riding and ATV.

You really can't beat his rigs either.

The first one I had made for the GP and the second one is for the Redhawk. Both balance nicely.
