Rimfire pistol for practice

Hey all,

My brother in law has been getting into shooting over the past three years or so and is getting to the point where he just needs more time sending bullets down range. He has a mini-14 and a 10/22 sporter so he is a Ruger fan so far. He has enjoyed shooting my Ruger Standard, my MkII target, and my single six as well as my Hi Powers and 1911s. He is looking to get into handguns, but still has not developed a preference other than not revolvers (he does have better form with my pistols than with my revolvers).

I really haven't looked at Ruger's recent rimfire pistol offerings and wondered what other folks are getting now days for affordable range time? And as a stepping stone to larger bores?

Since he seems to prefer the pistols vs revolvers, and you've indicated a 1911, I'd strongly suggest a Ruger MKII or MKIII in 22/45 configuration.

I'll second a 22/45. Mine always seems to find its way into the range bag.

I have 2 of them and always end up putting a few rounds through them when I go to the range. Much fun and never fails me.

He and I went on the Ruger website yesterday and saw a whole selection of rimfires I was not familiar with, the 22/45's looked good, but I wanted to check here first.

Had you considered getting a 1911? For another $200 he can get a Ciener conversion and shoot .22 Long Rifle ammunition.... cheaper than buying a separate rimfire pistol for practice, and has the benefit of being the same grips, safety, slide relese, and trigger as the .45 version.

This is not to discourage the eventual purchase of another firearm, however..... if you know how many guns you have, it means you don't have enough.

Yep, thanks. He really doesn't know what features he wants in a 1911 yet (he was also looking at Hi Powers, CZ 75, and Sigs), and I'd hate for him to sink that much into one he's not happy with three months later. But that is on the horizon I'm sure.

As much as I love conversion units on my 1911s, a MkII or MkIII even 22/45 would not be bad, and you can usually sell them without losing a bunch of money.
