Evening fellas- a friend of mine picked up a pistol and offered to sell it to me but I have absolutely no experience or knowledge on it- I am pretty much strictly a revolver guy. Near as I can tell- it is a Mark I or Standard I pistol. The serial number is 11-7181X so I think it dates back to around 1972 or so.

There is a little bit of rust on the gun around the edge of the grips but I guess that might be expected from a 40 year old pistol. I would rate it as "fair".
Unfortunately, I am having difficulties posting pictures due to this ancient PC that I am using.

Would anyone know anything about these pistols and maybe, just maybe what an approximate price might be on something like this. Thanks very much for your time.

Well, a Standard model will have fixed sights. Only thing the rear sight can do is be punch drifted left or right. A MK I will have an adjustable rear sight.
The serial number you listed is from 1972 as you suspected.
As for value. A lot depends on different features. If it's a Standard model, there can be 2 barrel lengths. Either way it can run from $200-$250 for a "fair" condition gun. If it's a MKI gun, it could have a few different barrels as well. In general, a MKI in fair condition will be $225-$300. If it's a rarer variation of a MKI then maybe a little more.

good info above, as to the 'rust', remove the grip panels and put a bit of oil, even a rust fighting one, like rustbuster or such, on a bronze wool pad, ( less aggressive than some OOO or 0000 steel wool), either will work, and gently rub off the rust build up, clean and lightly oil, you'll be good to go.........by the way, any Mark I will say and be marked that,Mark I, on the side of the receiver as such, if it only says Ruger, and the address, its a 'standard' auto, either 4 3/4 or 6 inch barrels............the sights and barrel length are the tell tale things to look for......good price info above.
