Removing rust

Well, my 1974 era Single Six grew a small bit of rust on the cylinder. :shock:

Happy to report I have not gained a lot of experience removing rust. :D

I imagine ultra fine wool is the answer.Steel,or Bronze?
Other methods?
 
The method I use is to soak it with Kroil (or another good penetrating oil) for hours or a day or so; rub affected area with 0000 steel wool, or bronze wool; if really stubborn I'll use a copper penny (one made prior to 1982) to scrape it lightly. I also use a fine bronze gun cleaning brush with the Kroil if I have the brush handy. Copper residue wipes off with the Kroil or Hoppes. Really best to soak it with the oil first, however tempting it is for a quick attack with the steel wool...
