Red pad for No. 1

Is there a good reproduction red pad for No. 1 rifles? If not, is there a fairly close duplicate that gets used a lot?

Galazan sells a plain solid red pad either 1/2" or 3/4" but if there's something better out there, please let me know. Trying to replace a factory black pad.

There is a Pachmyar Red/pink Olde English peddled grain pad that is pretty colse to the original peddle grained Ruger pad. It's a tiny bit thick but has nicely rounded edges etc.

I have some take off pads that are the standard Ruger #1 Goodyear pad in the brick color with the straight edges. Sometimes but certainly not always I can find one that is big enough to grind to fit.

All you have to do is try and swap off a #1 pad and you will soom learn that the size of the butt stock has changed over time and even within time frames there are significant differences. The single biggest difference on much newer #1s is that they seem to be taller at the butt and many most of the pads I have on hand end up too short in the area of the heal.

Send me a PM if you want me to try and find one and we cn go from there, if you want Ruger. Otherwise the Pachmayr is a pretty decent replacement and looks pretty close to correct.

Call Ruger, the new 300 H&H Cabelas guns all have red pads.

Not sure if a Hawkeye pad would fit or not

TRue: If yoour NOT trying to have the correct generation on the rifle ala an earlier generation #1 then it probably doen't matter one way or the other. A NEW red recoil pad for a Hawkeye wouldn't be correct for your 1980 #1 but then that isn't the issue here.

I put one the 1/2" Galazan pads on one of my "special" No. 1's that started life witha black pad and I am pretty pleased with it. At a glance, it looks like a Ruger pad and is just about the right thickness. I think I paid $20 for this fit-yourself pad at the time.
