REAL SC4?

Did Ruger manufacture any old modle super single six's with a 4 5/8" barrel in the 60-xxxxx serial# range?

Well, according to the RENE,, only one with 61-08522 was built. For a factory executive. In a private collection.
All the others were before the 60- prefix.

Bob, I know of three. Serial numbers 60-71021 and 60-08522 are listed in Dougan's pocket book. Serial number 60-71396 that is in my personal collection. I know that serial numbers 60-71021 and 60-71396 both letter as 4 5/8. Both these guns are boxed. On gun your checking on factory letter would be mandatory. I would like to know what serial number the gun is you have.

Serial number is 60-872xx

Its definitely a 4 5/8". It might be a cut down. It doesn't have the end of the muzzle band saw marks I have seen with other cut downs. Muzzle end is clean, like it was lathe cut. Front sight is flush with the end of the barrel. I cant tell any re-bluing.

61-08522 Is the correct # The number is wrong in Dougans Pocket book he calls it a 60 pre fix. But it is indeed a 61 prefix.It was a Dinner Presentation gun for Richard Nixon. The get together never took place and the gun was sold by a high level Ruger employee. I took care of it for a while. It is complete with every thing it left the factory with. Including a letter from Bob Deardon. (Ruger Manager)

As you may know, the SC4’s were result of the mistake of drilling front site screw hole too far into barrel. Barrels were already mated to frames so they were saved by being cut off just behind the hole. Thus there should (could) be be horizontal saw marks on the end of the barrel. There is even one with reminents of the threads still showing.

I'd be curious to see the letters. Until this email thread nobody's even talked about a 60- or 61- gun that would letter as SC4 except for the one that Don Garlitz mentions as the Nixon gun (this was Ed Nolan's example that's been known since the '80's.). I'd never heard the Nixon tie to it before now.

And to add...I tried getting a letter on the oddball 60- gun that is in Dougan's booklet. It came back as SC6.
I also lettered another 60- that was said to be 4-5/8"...this one was another that was floating around the West coast...don't have the sn in front of me now but it also lettered as SC6.
