Mike: Probably a Swainsons Hawk. Lopped that snakes head off and took the rest to a nearby tree. [mesquite]. Dr.C

thanks, Doc. I've seen Swainsons before but they aren't common enough out here for me to recognize easily. Our main "snake killers" are plain old Redtails and, of course, ol' Mr. Roadrunner.

Doc, Your pictures are always so beautiful! are you by any chance using Canon L Glass? and if so what Focal length are you using most?, your pics look like you have a 70-200 L lens am I right?

I just watched a redtail help thin out the rattler population at our local game preserve. We've also seen blue herons get 'em. Both were really "baby rattlers." All the birds seem to cut the head off before swallowing. (It was a very long process for the heron; their bill is sharp, but not made for cutting, it seems. And a long, hard swallow--they like to eat their prey whole).

Great picture! It is amazing how quiet the hawks are when they fly in for the kill. I've seen a number of Redtails while in the deer stand. See them but never hear them. Now when the turkeys fly in or out . . . :shock:
