In about a week my daughter is going to buy her first deer rifle. She decided on the RAR. She liked the bolt action, the safety, weight and the recoil pad. She kinda liked the price too (she's an 18 yr old bargain shopper). We decided on the .243. My question is, should we go with the standard or compact model? The compact would be more convenient but would it effect velocity and recoil?

The compact seems to be designed as a youth model. You should have her shoulder both to find out what fits her best. Not knowing her height of course makes it a guess but I would select the standard model for a 18 year old young lady.

Let us know what you decide and a picture of your selection is always welcome. :)

Velocity will be slightly less, but not enough to make any practical difference. You might be able to measure a slight increase in recoil with sensitive enough instruments, but not with a shoulder.
