RAR Predator in 223, comments

Thinking about a RAR Predator in 223 caliber, have not handled one as of yet. I will have to buy it on-line so all the info that I can get before I push the BUY NOW button will help a bunch. Thanks, Jerry

I have a Ruger American Standard rifle (as "standard" as any left-handed bolt rifle can be) also in .223 Rem and the differences between your potential Predator and my rifle are the green stock color, the somewhat heavier barrel contour, the threaded muzzle and the factory Picatinny rail. Otherwise they are the same.

Mine is a joy to shoot. It is a true 1 moa shooter with decent handloads and feeds and ejects flawlessly. I installed a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 SF scope in the factory Weaver bases on mine and I shortened the trigger return spring by about 2 coils and the trigger pull is now a very clean 2.5 pounds. Despite the fast 1:8 rifling twist, it is very accurate with 55 grain bullets but should stabilize most bullets up to about 80 grains.

If you get the Predator, you should be as pleased as I am.

Thank you 22/45 that is a good comparison of the two. I am not sure what I would do scope wise but 14 to 16 would be a top power. As far as ammo, for just shooting I may use Federal factory bulk but a varmint load may be 65 to 80 gr sp of some sort. Not sure if I will screw anything on the muzzle. Also good to know on the trigger. Again, thank you for your comments.

I found this camo stock model with full length barrel. Great rifle that provides an inch at 100 all day long with reloads or factory ammunition.

Not sure if they still have the deal, but my son just picked up a Savage 12FV.... with Cabela's price and a Savage rebate, his net cost was $230.

I've had a 12FV for about 8 years - glass bedded in a Boyd's stock, with the right loads (60 grain flat base Sierra and 25.5 grains of Reloder 15) it will shoot a 3/8 inch 5-shot group. The 1:8 twist is good for 69 grain bullets, and iffy for anything longer.

I have the American Predator in 223, along with 3 other Americans. They all shoot great. The Predator loves 50 to 55 grain bullets, with the 53 grain being most accurate. Groups of 1/2" at 100 yards are typical. This with a 3x9 scope.

I also have a Savage 12FV as mentioned above. This is a very heavy gun with a 26" barrel. It is definitely not a gun to carry around much.

The Predator on the other hand is a handy varmint rig and does well on the bench as well.

I have the 77 Hawkeye predator in 223 I installed a Nikon 2.5 x 10 Pro staff. This Gun is a tack driver.
