Range time with the Super Blackhawk

Spent some time on the range today with my new (used) Super Blackhawk. Shot (almost) a box of 44 Special before changing to mags.


The guy three benches down was shooting some small auto. He kept looking my way when I capped off the 44 Specials. Finally, he walked over to ask what I was shooting. Told me he thought that was a little much gun for a small range.

"I mean," he asked "do you think you could get any louder?"

Ooh! A challenge. I broke out the magnums. I think I could hear the guy's eyes bug out when I dropped the hammer on the first round. By the time I was loading the second cylinder, he was packed and headed for his car.

Aside from the broken grip, I was not displeased. The Specials were very pleasant to shoot. The recoil from the Magnums wasn't even too bad, though I only got 12 rounds down range.

Good shootin'! The guy probably didn't bring enough hearing protection. On the plinking range at my club, a .44 Mag. would probably be the "quiet" gun :wink:

The plinking range is all the way at the other end of the firing line from where we were. He was shooting a .380, I think. And I wasn't the only magnum out there. There was another short barreled .44, and a couple of .357's. I just happened to be closest to this guy.

I too wondered if he had ear protection, and eye protection as well.
But, was this a club, a private or a public range? What are the rules?
I say if you were not breaking any rules, and if he didn't have proper protection, maybe an offer of ear protection & then an offer to allow him to enjoy your Super could have "enlightened" him.
If it's a private club, you can expect he will do one of a few things. He'll complain to the BOD, or even worse, if he's on the BOD, he'll try & make some rule changes.
If it's a public range, he may not be able to do anything.
If it's a gun shop owned range, I'd bet his complaints will fall upon deaf ears!

It's a shooting club open to the public. No rules were broken, and as I said already, I was not the only one shooting magnums that day.

Im always getting looks like that with my 44. If on the rifle range its usually with my 444 marlin with 18.5" ported barrel and when i owned it, my Gunsite Scout. Mainly its the guy on the 300 yard range shooting his 375 Cheytac. What a fantastic piece if equipment that is!!

I was shooting my 6mm BR bench rifle one day and running some pretty good
100 yd groups while testing various bullet brands in that rifle.

Then in walks this guy with a .50 BMG rifle.
The first shot blew my hat off and THAT ended my day at the range.

Now ,he did nothing wrong,no rules broken,pays his dues just like me.
I am glad I get up earlier than he does to shoot before the wind comes up.

A scoped .44 Bisley SBH is a bit too heavy for off-hand shooting, so I rested my elbows on the bench.

Now, if I could only get the rest of them in line with the one on bottom left...

44 specials are loud? I find them softer than most all the other centerfire pistol calibers. 8) 8)

Can be . When you shoot in a metal 3 sided porch near one of the sides .... Sounds real 'loud' ... Step off the porch and sound is back to the low pitch boom (Skeeter Load). You can image a .44Mag or hot .45 Colt....

Back in 2010 when I was in Tx. I was shooting at the Ft Hood civilian range with my .44 mag. 240 gr jsp with 22 gr 2400. I cleared out stalls on both sides. I have to admit that even with hearing protection the stalls made the concussion multiply. You could feel the goodness. I now keep my loads in the 19.5 gr of 2400 range. Ha ha. By the way the OP did some good shooting. We had freezing rain last night. Just getting in and out of the house is a danger. I'll light some cartridges later in the week.

I have started using plugs and muffs when I shoot my hot. 45 colt loads and have been told a few times that my guns are very loud. It comes in handy when the range Rambos show up and want to shoot right next to me

I once had someone offer me some of their .38 specials to fire, because they weren't as loud as the .45 ACP's I was shooting. I had to explain tot his person that you couldn't shoot .38 ammo out of a .45.

Plugs and muffs for me too. Even on the rifle range the proliferation of muzzle brakes on hunting rifles has made it painful on the ears.
