Range Bag Suggestions??

Looking to upgrade my range bag. As with most of us I take too much crap with me. Looking for a option with wheels and a retractable handle this time. Fairly large in size. Undecided about price as I am still unsure what features are important. Any suggestions?

I’ve thought off and on again about a wheeled range bag also. I’ve also thought about just some sort of wagon. Like a garden wagon to chuck my regular range bag into and pull. They have larger wheels so if your range is outside, they will roll over uneven terrain.

I don’t have one yet, and wonder why not every time I have to make two or three trips lugging heavy bags from house to car, and car to range and back home again.

You could add some your favorite rail type and make it tactical.

Best range bag I've seen and used is the one sold by Brownell's. A bit more expensive than the others but they're super quality. My son and I both have then and are very pleased with these range bags.

As a USPSA & SASS competitor,, I've seen all kinds of range bags, packs, & wheeled carts. Including a lot of folks shooting 3-Gun or using a cart with a PCC in USPSA.

Buying one built specifically for shooting can be pricey.

What I've seen,, and is quite a bit less expensive AND easily made to fit an individual's needs is the simple 3 wheeled baby cart. The center area can carry a normal bag or bags of various sizes & shapes,, while the sides can easily have velcro strapping & a padded base for long guns. What's more,, you can easily use a lot of what you already have to make it your own personal preferences in how or what you normally carry.
And,, if you make it where the bags & such are not permanently attached,, they also fold up to fit in many small spaces. They are easy to push over all kinds of terrain, balance well, and make carrying stuff much easier.
Lastly,, you can often find deals in thrift stores on good used ones.

I have a custom built cart for SASS,, and yet,, I stopped shooting SASS long ago. I built it & it still cost me a fair amount for the materials,, plus my time. Next,, I also have one of those folding, expanding pull carts,, with the cloth storage section. It folds up nicely,, carries a lot of stuff,, (but not long guns easily,) and is a bit harder to drag behind me. But a 3 wheeled baby buggy type balances better, and can easily be made to hold 2-4 long guns,, as well as plenty of stuff.

I really hate to expose myself in this way, BUT.... for years I've used an 'old lady' metal shopping cart. Yes even when I shot SASS; I used bungee cords to hold two heavy-duty card board (3" dia) cylinders to hold my rifle and shotgun. Just dumped everything else into the cart... wasn't pretty. I took a lot of (well deserved) abuse for it, but as the years went by, the guys at my shooting club started coming in with them, and I was 'vindicated'. Nowadays, the more macho (read younger) guys are using BIGGER and more MANLY devices..... I'm old, still using my shopping cart....I'm gonna get a POLICE medallion to hang on it (maybe that will help my image) :-)

Most of my adult life I shot smallbore and high power matches all over the west coast. I had many bags with that special use equipment. Cannot say 1 is better than others, just look at what you want in person not just photos online.
I now have a hand bag type range bag. I made sure to have a compartment to hold 1st aid stuff to handle cut fingers to gun shots. My rifle cases hold cleaning gear, mags etc.

I bought my son one of the large range bags that the NRA sells. Holds more than a half dozen handguns and multiple accessory compartments. Has wheels and a retractable handle. He has had it about a year and it has held up quite well considering it gets transported to the gun club just about every week.
He also has a large nylon type bag that he recently bought from Midway. It seems to be a well made piece of equipment.

I also use a large black leather range bag that was given to me as a gift probably 20 years ago.
It generally is used to transport a half dozen or more handguns and has held up very well over the years. No maker name on it unfortunately or I would buy another. My wife doesn't remember who made it and the gun shop she bought it at no longer carries it.
I recently was gifted a leather shooting bag from Russell Leather. It is made of bison leather and is a very nice range bag. Holds four or five handguns.
We also transport handguns to the gun club in hard sided pistol cases.
We need all of these because we typically take about 30 handguns to the range every week. We also transport all of our ammuntion in carriers that hold four plastic .30cal ammo cans.
And yes...the back of my son's Suburban does get a bit crowded with all that gear. It gets much worse if we take rifles and shotguns to the range for an all day excursion.
The Suburban requires some creative packing especially considering the amount of space that the clay bird thrower takes up.

I'm with Bob. I do not like for my bags to scream "GUN!". I also find that tool bags are typically better made and cost less. YMMV.

My range is 150 yds from my front door to the backstop. I have an NRA duffle bag that carries targets, ammo and handguns. Also stapler etc. I use a folding Black and Decker table modified with 3/4 inch plywood on the top. If I take long guns they are in their own cases. I grab my lawn tractor, attach my small trailer, pull up by the front door, load everything into the trailer, and away I go!

I’ve used a Black and Decker rolling tool box for the last 20 years, got it on sale at Lowes for a little bit of nothing and finally figured out what I could use it with.

Whatever you choose, if it’s with wheels make sure you get the larger diameter wheels. Mine are small and it’s a bear sometimes going to the ranges I go to.

These are really, really neat! I've never seen them before. Looking around Home Depot's website, it looks like there are several bands, Dewalt and Rigid and Milwaukee all look like nice portable tool carriers.

It really makes me wonder why a gun company doesn't have something similar, but purpose build for pistols. Or at least inserts say, to hold pistols and miscellaneous junk. Ruger could get something branded with the big Ruger logo on the side.

Thanks for the suggestions. Leaning towards one of the tool bags/ boxes mentioned. Got to look them over and see which one has the most useful or useless compartment configurations.

HI,

I use a plain metal Craftsman tool box for that very reason.

Parking at our range is such that wheels aren't generally necessary to get from vehicle to shooting lane at the rifle/pistol range, but when I go to trapshooting tournaments, there are all kinds of wheeled carts, some "store bought" while others are modified or even fully custom built. Bigger wheels than the luggage cart/tool bag size are favored there.

I got a great deal on the Milwaukee Box from home depot. Saved about seventy bucks on the package.Got the large wheeled box. A smaller box with a handle and then what is more or less a milk crate for the top. All interlock with each other and are made very sturdy. Don't have much in the way of compartments. But I have found over the years that most compartments are just a fuzz small for what i want to put in them anyways.

Think I will have a lot of uses for this box. Probable keep my old range bag. It fits in the box with space to spare. So I can keep all the essentials ready to go in one spot and just load up what I need for the particular trip drop the bag in and I am all set.
