Doc, if you don't mind sharing, what kind of camera equipment do you use? Do you use zoom lenses?

You take excellent pictures, I was just curious.

Broadhead" Most of the time the lenses are prime [not zoom] The main lens is a Canon 400mm F5.6L. A relatively cheap one with a good track record. I use a 300mm f4.0 lens some . The 50mm f4.now and then and like the 70-to 200 f2.8 for a :walk around lens: I have and like the old 5D Canon body. For wildlife a 7D would probably be a better choice. Thanks for asking. Dr.C
 
Doc, I'm not as familiar with Canon as I used to be. Are the 5D/7D bodies film or digital??

For wildlife why do you feel the 7D to be a better choice?
 
Ruger Packer, If you don't mind me answering your question, both cameras are digital. I have a 40D and it is an excellent camera. I am sure Doc will agree.

Rp: The whole crop factor thing is confusing, I like the full frame camera and crop to suit myself if necessary, just my opinion. Gary
 
Doc: How often do you use the histogram for proper exposure>some of the time, most of the time, allways? I use it all of the time. I love your work, composition, sharpness and correct explosure in all your pic's. Oh, one more question>do you always use manual exposure? Keep those pic's coming, always a treat for me and the forum members.

Stuart: I use the histogram very frequently. Most all of my photos are shot in aperture priority based mostly on the desired depth of field. Thannks for your kind comments and intrest. Dr.C

Doc! I think this needs a little more explanation. When you look at this you would wonder why anyone would buy the 5D. One would think that by putting the same lens on a 7D it becomes a more powerful lens when that is not the case. The 7D has a smaller sensor then the 5D. So with the smaller senser to get a 8 X 10 you have to enlarge the image more then you would with the larger sensor of the 5D. Since it's enlarged more this makes it look as if the 300MM lens has become a 420 MM lens. This is not the case as all that has been done is the image has been enlarged more then the full frame image. You could enlarge the full frame image the same amount and both would look the same. To sum it up: To fill any size picture 4X6, 5X7, 8X10, 11X14, You have to enlarge the image from the sinsor more from the crop body camera then from the full frame camera, which make the picture appear to be shot from a larger lens, which in fact the image has only been enlarged more. I think the advertisement people came up with this idea to make the cameras with smaller sensors look better as they are cheeper to make. As everyone knows, the larger the negative or in the case of digital, the sensor. The better and clearer the final picture. All other things being equal.
 
The crop factor gets confusing. It has more to do with the relative FOV (Field of View). The 300 on a Crop (Canon, 1.6x) has th equivalent FOV of a 420 on on a Full Frame. It's called a crop factor because it is essential a center crop of a full frame type view. So you get to fill the frame up more. It does help some depending upon what you're trying to shoot. Some people shooting sports go for crop bodies to get a little extra reach with a smaller more managable lens (a 300mm is easy to shoot than a 400mm for free hand shooting).

The main advantage of larger sensors is better light gathering capability. The number of pixels per area and their size makes huge difference as does the design of the micro lenses and the processing of the data from the sensor itself. Digital can be a bit crazy. A larger sensor does not necessarily relate to an image that can be enlarged to a creater size. An 12mp crop will enlage better than a 4mp full frame. Size isn't the only factor to consider. All things being equal, a larger frame size would be more desirable. But even then, a new 7D might out perform an older 5D in certain situations being of a newer design.

As far as crop versus full frame for lens, 300mm focal length is 300mm focal length. FOV is different. Larger sensors are usuall better in low light due to larger pixels (more light gathering ability). That's why a 10mp 40D can perform better than the later 50D and 60D's in low light conditions since the newer models have more, smaller pixels on the same size sensor. But the 50D has more image detail due to more MP. But each pixel gathers less light so the images aren't as saturated with color and light. Then you have optic design and build that can render even the greatest sensor in the best body a complete POS.

Not to hijack the thread doc, but I think you'll agree with this. As I see this is not new to you.

on a 1.6 crop body a 300mm lens actually performs as a 480mm lens as you multiply any lens focal length by 1.6 without losing speed (aperture)
 
Thanks guys, a lot of great input here by people who know and can relate, all I was willing and capable of saying is that it is confusing . I too have a 30D and it is a very capable camera but the higher mp cameras will out resolve the lower mp cameras every time. Dr.C Thanks Again
