Hi all, I came across a new model SBH. This gun has been shortened to 5 1/8, has a fancy front sight like on o rifle, and has J.K. On one side of the top strap and #XX of 200 on the other. Of course non of the monkeys working in the shop had any idea where it came from or what was done. Also, the barrel itself doesnt look quite kosher as for color and there are no writings either. Anyone have an idea about this. The price is attractive but I think this may be hard to sell if it shoots poorly due to the unusual appearance. Thanks.

IF you're buying it for yourself as a shooter, and IF the price is right you could probably re-barrel the gun and make it a good project.
IF you're buying it for possible resale, I'd pass unless it were a give-away price.

That's an interesting SBH. Blue or Stainless? Serial number would tell us when it was made and possibly a clue to how it started life. Do the stampings on the top strap look professionally done? Why do you question if it might shoot poorly due to the appearance?
Without any Ruger rollmarkings on the barrel. it's definitely had a custom barrel change which could be associated with the 200 quantity. Possibly all 200 had the barrel change exhibited on this one or it was a group of 200 but only this one has subsequently had a barrel change.

Thanks Bob, I had forgotten to mention this was a 44 Mag. Being numbered like this I was hoping someone knew who J K was. It would be nice to get a good shooter, but without more info the price isnt that great. Jim,what I meant was if it doesnt shoot well, someone else would be hesitant like me due to obvious modifications. Also, this gun had a wider grooved trigger so my sense is someone put a lot of work into this.

Ok, I understand what you meant now; with obvious modifications someone might question the quality of the work and therefore the accuracy. All SBHs have the wide trigger of all the NMs but SBHs come standard with the grooved trigger.
Hopefully someone on this forum will recognize it as some special edition.

If the price is attractive, go for it. I doubt you will get burned on the deal. You said the barrel didn't look like the same color as the rest of the revolver. I believe that was caused by rebluing the barrel after the sight was soldered on.

Someone "lost his ***" on the custom 44 VAQUERO I bought last fall. It was cut to 3.5, magna-ported, and a super blue job....$350 out the door. The gun shop probably gave some considerably fewer yankee dollars for a gun with $400+ of custom work.
I'd view it as a base for a cusom gun...no premium above a standard AND probably less.

+1 As you said, trading one in to a LGS is the last way to dispose of a custom. But can be oustanding buys for the next guy that comes along. Bought my new model re-chambered to 38-40 that way. And in addition I had fun making some simple changes to the way I liked it.
