Air Cav and Huey's.

The door gunners. The crew chief manned one door gun. Who manned the other?

There are no door gunner MOS's. We always had a person on both guns, but I just don't remember how the manning was assigned to the 2nd gun. One of my MOS's was Aircraft Armament, and sometimes they'd refer to the class as door gunner school. But I don't remember any of the ordnance folks manning a gun.

I lay awake at nights with these kinds of questions.

Thanks.

WAYNO.

I'm interested in this as well. In my enlisted days I was an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist in the Air Force, serving as an aerial gunner on AC-130a's, but my AF Specialty Code (MOS) also included qual as a helicopter door gunner on the M-60.

I've wondered too. In the book Chicken Hawk, the author/Huey pilot said it was 11Bs doing it,that they could interchange with their regular grunt duty.

The guy sitting beside me on the plane to VN said he was going to be a door gunner but I don't recall any talk about MOS.

Chicken Hawk. One of the very few books I've read since I left the service. I was unable to put it down til I had it completely read.

Many 'volunteered' and others were assigned from withing the units. Read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Door_gunner
I went through the last 'door gunner' training given during the Viet Nam war while at Ft Rucker. We had day training on ground mounted M-60s, tower mounted M-60s, then we did daytime aerial firing from UH-1H and then a night firing from the UH-1H. I shot last at night and had all tracers in my 200 round string. A REAL light show. The barrel was wasted.

I was in the 101st but can not answer the OP question, as I was an equipment operator
MOS 62M20. Only time in Huey's was for Hollywood Jumps. ps

FM is spot on.
However, while I never was in combat,, our SOP was to use anybody we could. We'd train all the support guys in doorgunning during our training. We also had a SOP order to where we could "draft" anybody on the ground, not doing an important job into manning a second gun.
My primary position was crew chief, but when airborne,, I was also supposed to man a gun.

I just didn't remember ever training anybody, but we always had somebody on both guns. I crewed a lot of birds, and I remember every face of every crew chief, but I cannot remember specifically, a single face on the second gun.

Thanks.
