Question for the older carpenters

It all comes down to the codes and inspections in your area. Some are much more stringent than others. Always have been.

I had to re-do a shower in the house up in Orlando; Noticed the walls outside the shower were kind of swelling up and shower tile were bulging.
Ended up carefully peeling all the tile off two of the shower stall walls, removing the door and frame and discovered that under the tile was gypsum board; Tore it out and replaced it with the cement board, replaced the damaged wall board out side the shower and then cleaned off all the old tile** and reset it on the new walls.
** three of the tiles had broken as I removed them, went to the company that had sold the tile when the house was built and they told me that color/design was no longer available. SO off to Home Depot (or was it Lowes?) where I picked out three decorative tiles with fish on them and placed them carefully spaced at eye level on the wall under the shower head. DAMN !! A good thing my Father insisted us kids all knew how to fix cars and maintain a home; wait a minute !! OR was he just making use of FREE labor ?? No Matter, love him still and I pray GOD found a nice place for him in Heaven with a "Ham" radio station.##

Yeah, and after Andrew hit South Florida and homes fell apart , They discovered that many of the "inspections" consisted of the "inspector" pulling up at the curb, rolling down his window and signing off without ever stepping foot on the property. A BUNCH of CROOKED builders, Crooked County/City Inspectors and a bunch of bucks in payoffs.
