We just got our second snowstorm this weekend (in a normal winter, we would start getting snow about Thanksgiving and it would last until Easter. The snow from yesterday is mostly gone already and the Cascades are mostly brown). No need to discuss Climate Change. just answer the question below.


Enquiring minds want to know: Which is worse?

1. Filling the tank in a blizzard?

OR

2. Filling the tank when the temp is below zero?

I only fill my car's tank when it is getting close to empty. What does the weather have to do with it?

A tankard of ale always tastes best when it's below zero and you have a roaring fire (inside).

Is this question about density? Would gas change density with temperature? You would get more below zero?

Sorry about the Cascades. My wife used to snowboard at Snoqualmie pass. I bet they are missing their ski pass revenue.

I never let mine get below 2/3rds in the Winter, so blizzard is not a problem.

Below zero is only a problem if the wind is blowing.

I've seen a number of situations over the years, where such as 1/4 tank of gas more could have increased the joyous survival benefits in the outcome of some blizzard-related motoring tragedy....but that's out here in non-urban country.

I would say blizzard because you are more likely to introduce moisture into your gasoline tank. :shock:

My rule is if there is a Blizzard.... I'm not going driving out in the boondocks..... stay home by the fire and fillip a tankard as mentioned above. And I doubt if the gas pumps would even work around here at below zero 'f'.

Constant cold is no biggie, throw some wind in and it get way worse, then throw in precipitation.....

It's been 6 degrees the last few nights=days not a lot better. I'm staying inside and remodeling. I've got a new Ruger Old Army to try out also and a Colt Army Special in 41 LC. Once my Kirst cylinder gets here, I'll not have any excuses.

Below zero is worst. Diesel fuel turns to jelly starting about 20 deg F. Below zero the fuel must be "treated" if you want your truck to run. When you fill up at the local gas station, you never know if they have Treated the fuel enough for Below Zero.

Paying the insurance means adding your own antifreeze additive. Doing this either your hands freeze doing it - or your gloves smell like diesel fuel.

I Live in NE OHIO, so occasionally...see HEAVY SNOW, even a blizzard or two.........
AND usually a few weeks of sub-zero temps.....(Those usually come with minus 10-20+ degree wind chill factors,
Those can freeze up or burst yer water pipes).

BUT, I am not allowed to call those rough,
Cause have an online friend 1 state north of me,MICHIGAN.....
If I say it is 10 below here,20+ below up there........
And GOD FORBID I post a pic of snow half way up my car door,.....he posts real time pic.s of snow a few feet higher than his entire ride......LOL.

As far as the gas tank goes......
Come winter, I always try to keep 1/2 tank plus.......usually higher.

But,my SUV's heater sucks.....
Prolly 1/7nth of my gas goes to warming the ride up,heater going full tilt.
LOVE THE AWD/HATE THE HEATER :wink:
