Question about Security Six grips..

Hi all. I saw a nice Security Six at the LGS today. Unfortunately I didn't take a pic, but it appeared to have factory wood grips that I see all over. This particular piece has what looks to be a cutout in a rectangular shape on the very butt of the grip in the center of it. If you held the gun upside down it is on the bottom of the grip about 1/4 by 1 inch. I think you could see the serial number on the frame through it. Is that normal or some option? I know little about these guns, but that struck me as odd. I only looked through the display glass so I am sorry I can't give better details.

Those would likely be what most call the "target" grip.

The others, and more common, are similar to S&W "Magna" grips that have a diamond checkering on the sides and do not cover the backstrap or bottom of the grip frame.

That's my favorite grip for one of my favorite revolvers ! They are much easier to control those full load 357s. JMO ! The 4" stainless I believe to be the best Security Six but the Ruger doesn't make many bad ones.

This is my second SS and it came with these on it (bought a few years ago from a friend). My first SS was purchased in about early '82 and had the wood grips that followed the outline of the frame. Not sure which was first.
