Question about LCR

I was wondering what the LCRx in 357 can or can't do versus the SP101 n the same caliber, other than being about five ounces lighter?

One advantage of the LCRx is the hammer. Even tho the SP hammer is not overly obtrusive, the LCRx hammer sits lower.

Should be smaller in overall size also. Ones probably better for carry and occasional shooting vs. occasional carry and more frequent shooting.

I was typing as ^ posted. I see that but I normally holster carry my 101 so that isn't a real problem.

I was just wondering how brutal the 357 would be in the LCR since the 101 is heavier and is nasty when using 357. Is it's (LCR) grip angle different so it handles the 357 better?

357 recoil in the LCR is nothing short of brutal.
Even more so if you put boot grips on it.

My lcrx .357 sucks to shoot with full power magnum loads but is really great to carry. Very pleasant to shoot with .38 specials though. Def shootable with the magnum rounds, but just not something designed for "plinking".

38+P is no fun in the LCR either. The mag model is a bit heavier as I understand, but I have no desire to find out what it is like shooting 357 Magnum in that platform. Honestly, I feel 357M is a bit of "overkill" anyway, unless carrying for defense against animals that will try to eat you.....alive.

Obviously, a steel heavy gun will always be more forgiving than a lighter gun. But there are some .357 Magnum light loads for SD. Yesterday I put 5 rounds through my S&W 640 Pro of Remington Golden Saber. These move around just under 1100 fps out of a 2 inch. I found these more comfortable to shoot than the same round but in .38 spl (just under 900 fps) out of a S&W 642 air weight.

But some people don't like to carry a heavy gun. Or prefer pocket carry. That's the beauty of today's offers. From gun weight to recoil. We find what we can tolerate. And some people are more sensitive to recoil than others. Especially when we get older and arthritis sets in.

OP it looks like you have the perfect set-up, as that's probably my favorite grip for Ruger's & Smiths with my large hands. And for me, a light magnum load would work great in that gun.

I start out with the premise that if you have a D/A revolver you probably need to change the grips to something that fits your hand. If you do that the recoil isn’t that big of a deal. Many folks use Hogue grips to keep the trigger guard from hitting your knuckle. On the LCR the longer grip like what’s on the 3” LCRx grip.
I also changed the grips on my SP101.
I even changed the grip on my Speed Six. Just get something that works for you.

I rarely change grips on my guns, although I have somehow attained a boxful. I did change on my 3" model 60, becuase the hogues were cushier. That's about it I think.

Had an LCR after two range trips it went away. Did have an SP before the LCR , still have it and added another SP after the LCR.

If I have a 357 I need to be able to shoot 357 rounds with it. With the LCR not so much. With the SP never a problem.

I can't imagine shooting a 357 out of a lightweight snubby. Smallest I have is a 3" 60.......a cylinder full of 140 gr FN is all I can handle. Shooting specials is fine, though. The LCR and the 442 get wadcutters......both for carry and range time. Critical Defense standard pressure for reloads....mainly because of the shape. Had a 3" SP for a while, shot fine with the Magnums (heavier gun) but that trigger was super hard. Had to use both thumbs to cock it for single action. Traded it for the 60 and am happy.

Said it before in another thread. Have a smith scandium j-frame with titanium cylinder. It weighs maybe 13 ounces and is an airweight.

On one sitting I put 15 or so rounds of cor bon .357s through it.

Never do it again. Was like hitting my palm with a tack hammer. Can’t imagine an LCR would be much different (although I do have an LCR in both 9 and .38 which I’ve shot with +P rounds and it didn’t seem nearly as bad).

Plus there’s alot of blast and flash from the .357s. Doesn’t seem worth it.

I’ve also shot .357s through my steel frame K6S but it’s not nearly as bad and fully controllable. Not real pleasant but not awful.

.357s through a 2” barrel sp-101 are stout but a kind of non event. Lots of blast and flash though.

So I’d not put anything north of a .38+P through an LCR because I don’t think it worth it. Not to mention follow up shots and low light operations.

If shooting 38s, I prefer the LCR. Trigger is perfect.

My LCR only shoots wadcutters.....way easier to handle. Critical defense lite for reloads if needed. The LCR rides unnoticably in my right front pocket. Mine has the HI-VIZ front sight and the trigger is better than a Smith 442.....although both are acceptable. One thing to watch, though. I was shooting a new LRCx, shot about a half box of 130 gr target ammo that seemed a little hotter.....way more flame, and after that half box the screw in the front had backed off enough that the cylinder wouldn't close. The fire control housing had move away from the frame just enough. A quick screw in fixed that, and at home I added a drop of blue loctite and retorqued the screw. No problems since. Haven't had that problem with the LCR....yet....but then it's way newer and I haven't put anything but wadcutters through it. I do check it, though......just like I check the screws on all my revolvers after a range trip.

I have a 3" LCRx 357 I purchased new a few months ago. Have shot 330 rounds of 38spl and 25 rounds of 357 through it. The 357 are pretty harsh, but would be OK for 5 - 10 rounds, no more. I use 38's for practice and if I carry it, I will use 357 hollow points. I also have a 1-7/8" S&W 649 all steel in 38 only that I hate shooting. It feels similar to the LCRx in 357.

I also have a 4" GP100 in which I mostly use 357's. Only upgrade is a rubber Hogue grip.

FYI, my carry gun is a 9mm Sig P365XL. 12 rounds in a standard magazine and 17 with the extended magazine as a spare.
