Question about canned beans.

My wife buys beans in a large jar, can't think of the name off hand, and then buys ham that is cubed into small cubes and then adds broth for extra liquid. Then she puts them in a crock pot to heat them. Then makes a pan of cornbread and that's some pretty good eating. Quite simple to make.

In regards to hobos asking for a meal, my Grandpa was born in 1865 and he would tell of when he was a young child they would have indians show up unannounced at their cabin for a meal. He said his mother would drop what she was doing and fix them something to eat. He said they weren't threatening, they just wanted something to eat. He said they wouldn't over do it, like showing up everyday, just occasionally.

Love Bush’s baked beans especially the country style ones with bacon and brown sugar. Visited the factory in Tennessee last year and they had verities we never see in the stores around here. Unfortunately Duke wasn’t there so I didn’t get the secret recipe. We usually had the Campbell’s or Van Camps while I was growing up, my guess is they were cheaper than Bush’s. Very tempted to try tazbigdog’s or Wyandot Jim’s recipe both of which look delicious but opening a can of Bush’s is so easy and delicious. Other than pork and beans, peas and green beans I don’t like or eat beans at all as I was forced to eat them at every meal growing up… PTSD I guess. Reckon I would have starved if I was a hobo or a cowboy.

I like Bush’s beans right out of the can. But nobody else in my family does.

But my Mexican baked beans my boys devour.

5 cans of beans. Red kidney black etc.
1/2 jar of Goya Sofrito
1/2 jar of Goya Recaito
2 chopped onions
2 cans of Rotel tomatoes with chilies
Pack of yellow Sazon

Bring it to a boil keep stirring. Then put it on low snd cover it.

Great for tacos, burritos, nachos, etc.

My favorite is spread on a tortilla topped with a fried egg. Eat the egg and beans then roll up the tortilla. View attachment 83626View attachment 83627

The more you eat, the more you toot
The more you toot, the better you feel
So let's have beans for every meal

I just looked and Goya Sofrito and Recaito come in 3 sizes. Which would it be 6, 12 or 24 oz?

The 12 oz size. Be aware the Recaito is cilantro, not everone likes it. The 1/2 jars is for a big batch.

I’ve made it with and without them. It still comes out good.

FWIW, The recipe I use came off the bottle of Sofrito years ago. I don’t know if it is still there or not.

Good luck.

Does anyone remember the delightful combination of ham and lima beans referred to by a name unfit to be printed here?
A homemade version isn't bad but the GI version in C Rations was abominable. I had some given to me years ago and they were disgusting!

We hated them because we were expected to hate them. I think if I tried them now, they would be just fine.

  • The recipe features navy beans, pork, and a sweet tomato sauce.
  • Over the years, various flavors and formulations have been introduced, including vegetarian options.
Beans? Vegetarian? whooda thunkit?

Hows Vegetatian, no sugar / salt, new and improved, responsibly grown, fair trade, grown and packaged in the U.S.A, pesticide free organic?

Marketeers, they sure know how to lure in suckers!

Love Bush's beans (and a lot of other also). Bush's beans are from TN. The Bush's Visitor Center is located in Chestnut Hill, Tennessee, which is about 19 miles or about a half-hour drive from Pigeon Forge (it's over near Dandridge, TN). Been there several times and it is really interesting. You would be surprised at what all thay have canned in the past especially during WWII.

Warm beer- also yech. Don’t know how the Brits can choke it down. I
I spent some time in the London area and to my surprise they drink cold beer also.
I think that the Largers and Guinness types are cool, and the Pilsners are cold like we drink them. I do know that the beer I had in the different Pubs was cold and very good.
The IPAs are tossed down the water closet:-)

Canned beans were for city folk. My grandmother, who was raised and lived on a farm, always kept dried pinto beans in her cupboard. She'd occasionally boil some of those beans in a big pot, then store them in Mason jars, ready for the family to eat.
My grandmother would cook up some pinto beans and cut corn, and then can it in Mason jars. It made for a quick meal when she didn't have a lot of time.
