Question about 77R in 280 7MM Exp Rem

I recently bought a tang safety 77R for the action, but noticed that the barrel is stamped "280 7MM EXP REM" and thought that must have been the roll stamp for a short period of time. I called Ruger and was told that they had never stamped their 280s like that, but it is obviously a factory roll stamp, so I'm wondering what you guys/gals have to say on the subject. The SN is 771-440xx.

If that barrel stamp is "special", I'll sell it to somebody who would appreciate it and find another long action tang safety 77 action to build a 77 RSI 7x57 parts gun around.

Hi I have never seen one but have read about them and am pretty sure they did stamp some that way I have seen remingtons stamped that way I have remington brass head stamped that way

Remington changed the name of the 280 to 7m/m Express in order to spark sales of the excellent cartridge, a move that (in my opinion) failed and caused confusion. Ruger marked the M77R and M77V with the double caliber designation between 1981 and 1984. The M77RS should exsist although I've never seen or heard of one. According to Chad's excellent "Reference of Ruger Firearms" the known serial number range is 74-78508 to 77-77867. The R model is the most common, V is scarce and so far the RS is unknown (to me - reported one known by Chad) but would be very rare. All are uncommon to say the least. An ad in the Classifieds should produce quick results.

I used to have a 77R marked like that. Bought it new around '84 or '85. Sold it to guy in Alaska.

Randy, I saw an RS at a gun show in Palmer, AK about two years ago. It was in 98% condition. I think the asking price was $800. I didn't have the cash, so I let it pass. I haven't seen it again. I think I wrote the serial number down. When I get back from this road trip I'll look for it.
