Prototype Handgun Rest

Been fooling with this for a week or so. Since I have everything needed for making woodworking jigs, I figured why not apply that to a gun rest instead of buying something plastic.

Fully adjustable handgun rest. Elevation, windage, and arm rest are all adjustable to obtain the best support and steadiness for sighting in. Haven't put any padding on it yet, but hopefully will be able to try it out with some temp padding on all my hand guns and see what works and what doesn't, etc. It will clamp into a portable Workmate bench like is shown in the vise in the pics below. When I'm satisfied everything works as designed, I'll build another one out of oak or other hardwood.

What I might do is draw up some plans to share when I get any bugs worked out. Most of the hardware is available at local hardware or woodworking shops, and on-line of course.

You have done a nice job, I like the adjustment's and all, just curious where your arm might rest while firing the hand gun?

Maybe people don't need the arm to rest but for me it's more comfortable and helps me shoot more accurately when using a rest.

Just some scrap that was taking up space: cedar/pine/maple/ chunk of 2x4 .

6gun, the 2x4 block with the knobs on either end is the arm rest. Slides forward/back to accommodate a variety of handgun sizes, etc.

First test of the prototype. As you can see in the pic, I added some temp padding, and also a rubber cup for the grip to absorb recoil and add some additional stability (carved out an old rubber sanding block for that).

Pretty happy with it so far, but I need some new glasses. Could not get focused well on the front sight, which shows up in the vertical stringing. POA was std. bull on top of front sight.

This was the second target. First target, shots were low and left about 4" so went back in the shop and drifted the rear sight a bit. Still a little to the left as you can see, so might administer another tap or two.
The target bullseye (black) is 1" dia.

Got some time today to get in a little practice.

Went out today without the rest, just freehanding, and was pleased with my performance. 9 shots from 7yds, using Winchester white box fmj. A couple flyers (me ) but 7 of 9 were in the gray (2 in the black) in a pretty tight group for an old guy. Fairly rapid fire, POI and POA seem well aligned. So no more messing with the sights.
