I ordered this a couple weeks ago, just picked it up today. I wasn't going to do a thread on this one, BigPapa53 did one last week, his is in better shape than this one. But the things I ran into, I had too.
I decided to take the gf off to look for the R. First thing off the bat, the rear gf screws felt like they had been tightened by some one's pet gorilla! I have not stripped a screw head since I have been doing this. Both stripped! Almost like they were aluminum. Fortunately I know a guy who has parts. Frustrated, I went to the bottom screws. Thew were a bit tight all the way thru the backout. But no stripped heads. I then just loosened the front screw. I went back to the rear screws. They backed out with a little push power on the screwdriver. Finally got the gf off, no R. I did see some gunk in the works, hadn't been apart in years apparently, so I decided to tear it down. The h/t/l retainer screws all came out no problem. Took the erh screw out, and the screw end popped down about 1/2" and didn't spring out, I had to pull hard to get it out. Got it cleaned and put the innards back in, didn't forget the loading gate this time! Got the gf positioned and tried to put a rear gf screw in, no luck. Got my light and looked in the hole, the screw holes didn't line up! I put the bottom screws in to see if it would push up, no luck. Thought it must be a defective gf. I know a guy who has parts. Got another and put on it, still off a bit, but I managed to get them in after I put the bottom screws in. That took care of why the rear screws were so tight, had tension on them from being out of line. Got it back together, was installing the erf, Had to lift the screw end way up to get it started and then force the screw end down and hold it there. Way too much pressure. Figured it was a defective erh, I know a guy who has parts. Finally found on, full throw steel, with the proper screw. Same thing. I got to looking at it, and it was too close to the barrel at the frame. I started filing it down, concentrating on the frame end. I figured the hole had been mis drilled. Maybe put together on a Monday or Friday. I was taking a lot off it. I got my other RSSM, thinking the housing was mad special for some reason. Nope, still didn't work. I looked at the frame end of the barrels, the new one looked bigger. Got my mics and sure enough the barrel was bigger at the both ends. .7155 vs .6970. Muzzle ends were .6320 vs .6170 just behind the sights. You can see in the pic comparing with a standard housing how much I had to take off. And stiil had to hold it down to get the screw started.
I apologize about the long read, but a very frustrating afternoon. Has anyone ever encountered a "bull " barrel on one of these? Or a cyl frame miss drilled for grip frame screws? And if so, the erh had to be made differently. Any help would be appreciated. I had a dickens of a time getting the erh screw in, it needs to be redone, but I am not looking forward to removing it!

If I had been a little smarter, I would have used an alloy erh to get it right, rather than ruining a steel one. Live and learn.

Wish I could get a letter on this one. It is definitely different. a pic of the roll mark.

My first thought was that the gun has undergone some "custom" work by someone,, (not Ruger.)
The barrel looks a little long in the picture too.

And now,, the last picture,, showing the rollmarking. It APPEARS to be out of place. Yet,, the rollmark,, doesn't have the "inc" after the company name.

Interesting.

Hey, Tyrone

I had considered that myself. The barrel measures appropriate 6 5/8". This gun was made in '60 by the serial #. The "inc" would not have come around
till '63 0r '64. The roll mark is centered between the 2 lines. looking at the sight and the point on the top strap. No 'eagle' stamp on the barrel, which is right for the early production. My other one has the eagle on the barrel. An anomaly? Mistake? Accident? The fact the grip screws are out of line, and the barrel is bigger................. Before I filed the flanges of the erh, when I slid it straight to the frame hole. it was a considerable amount high. I have had them a bit high, but nothing like this one. I appreciate your thoughts and input. I am going to try the original gf on another gun tomorrow, see if it is the gf.

BigPapa53,, your barrel rollmark is centered on the top. The picture of Joey's gun,, looks like it's NOT on the top, but off to the side a bit. it MIGHT be the angle of the picture.

And the length of the barrel,, if it's 6-5/8" that's a little bit too long for a production gun. That would explain the problems with the ERH going on properly.

I would love to get a hands on, close up study of it myself. There are little details that come into play. The way the muzzle crown is cut for one.

I'd try & take a couple of identical models, and do a side-by-side comparison of each & every little thing I could study.

Interesting discussion about this one for sure.

This is out of RENE, Volume one. Has a description of the different roll marks, eagle vs no eagle,, and the variations from '59 to '64. Also has the ser # range. This one is '60, other one is '61.

In Knoxville.
A number of years ago, my apt. got broken into in Nashville. AH's took a 20 gauge my grandfather had given me, and 1 book of checks. I started getting calls from everywhere about bad checks. Went to the bank and got a notarized letter of forgery and sent to complainants. Everyone accepted it except a store in Springfield. They issued a summons to court. I took a day off work, went to SF for the court date, when my name was finally called the stores lawyer got up and said "After review we have determined Mr. Joey was never in Springfield, and we are dropping the charges". Their intent was to scare me into paying for the forgery. I got a copy of the check later, looked like it had been written by a 6 yo. The amount was on the Pay to line, the stores name was on the for line. Could not believe an idiot would take something like that. Springfield is a beautiful area. Just thought I would share my experience with you.

I have occasionally run into an ERH that didn't line up with the hole in the frame.

The easiest way to fit the ERH to the barrel:
Wrap the barrel with a piece of sand paper, smooth side against the barrel. Then slide the ERH up and down the barrel on the grit side of the sand paper until it fits.
Using the curvature of the barrel maintains the correct curvature of the ERH surface.

An excellent idea, Hondo! as it still lacks some, I will do that. Flat filing took the curvature off the "flange", I was wondering how to get it taken care of. This thing was WAY off the hole. Thanks much!

My barrel measures 0.678” at the frame and 0.602” at the muzzle. 6.5” to the front of the cylinder.

Shoots to POA, too. First time I’ve shot it.

I tried the gf on my other RSSM, lined up perfect and no problem with screws. Cylinder frame holes must be off a bit I decided to leave it on as it was in better shape than the one I pulled off. I remeasured my barrel, it is 6.5" as well.

Hondo, I really appreciate your help! I did this this morning, problem cured! Beat part is I didn't ruin a steel erh! Thanks much, man. Looks like it was made for it.
