Possibly ignorant question about OM Super Blackhawk

The cylinder base pin on an Old Model Super Blackhawk seems to be a captive affair--or am I overlooking something? I'm used to OM Super Single Sixes and Blackhawks where the pin can be removed completely.

yep, just long enough to 'hit' the backside of the ejector & housing, thereby NOT being able to "fall out" during firing like the other models can, from time to time......some folks have a hard time, as well as the half moon ( shoulder) that's meant to keep it "concentric", BUT can wedge, ( jam) against the bottom of the barrel, just can't seem to win at times......nothing wrong with plain old "round" center pins :wink:

Except for a small group of 6-1/2" guns the rest (thousands) were fitted with 7-1/2" barrels.

Scarce Factory 6-1/2" Old Model Super.

Hi Ralph,

An early 44 Flat Top OM Blackhawk cyl pin w/o collar can be substituted for the longer collared pin in your gun if you prefer a removable pin. Not an easy find however!

I also understand from reports on this forum that some new SBHs and Blackhawks (after 2009) have shipped with the standard pin instead of the collared pin. And I've seen # 38-18679, a 357 large frame NM Blackhawk. We don't know if that's a policy change at Ruger or if there was just a temporary inventory shortage of the collared pins.

But again, if you prefer a removable pin, one of these non-collared pins will work perfectly in your OM SBH even though it's a New Model pin with the plunger in the back end.
