Has anyone ever returned a Blackhawk for a poorly fitted grip frame? Do they fix it for free? I wonder if they could install a steel grip frame.

Was a thread not to long ago where a guy sent his back because the ears stuck up about 1/16" and Ruger replaced with a grip frame that fit right.

It's quite unlikely that you'll get a steel one out of them. You could order the smaller New Vaquero grip frame, which is steel though, but I'm sure that you'll need to pay for that one.

You could always order one from Brownells, fit it, and have it blued.

I've routinely ordered steel grip frames to install on my "shooters".
On all but the rimfires the steel grip frames seem to "make the gun better".

Swampman, I had the one they mentioned above and when I asked Ruger what the finish was so I could strip the grip frame and fit and polish it they said " since this is a new gun and you just purchased it we will have it picked up for return to the factory for repair". They paid second day air both ways and I had it back within 9 days. I bought it new and only had it a couple of weeks prior to calling them. They would not replace it with a steel one.

The regular Blackhawks with the aluminum grip frames are not fitted at all. They are painted or coated before they are even mated up with a cylinder frame.

That's why there are no last three serial numbers engraved on the grip frames as they do on the steel "fitted" grip frames.

I may just fit it my self, send it off for grips, and then have it Black Ice coated.

I would suggest you might get a stainless HUNTER grip frame if you have no objections to a two tone gun. You might also look at making your BLACKHAWK into a BISLEY. Yeah, I know....easy for me to spend your money.

There are some people here that have bought used VAQUERO grip frames in either blue or stainless steel from me in the past. (I installed HUNTER,or DRAGOON grip frames on a bunch of VAQUEROS or converted them to BISLEYS.) The used grip frames can be a pretty close fit....at least in my experience.
