I'm sticking with the .380/38spl theme so today, I'm housebound today,Let US know when you pull out the Charter Arms .44 Special Target Bulldog?
And before anyone says anything, this was after years of using it as my bicycle gun and getting all sweaty. It's since been cleaned up.
The pistol looks fine......BUT.....is that Pride blanket CA Compliant?
I like what I carry to look and feel good as well as function.... for .380 this is the top of the list:

At 0300, when the glass breaks, I don't want to worry about dropping a magazine, fumbling for the safety, or trying to rack the slide with a bad wrist. I want to use the five rounds to get to Ms. Mossy in the corner.

If you are worried about a magazine drop or not being up to racking the slide and releasing the safety you need to do a little more training on that pistol or find another. One in battery, safety on, ready to go. I pick it up, the thumb drops the safety, and I am ready for whatever comes next.
Colt used to make a small .380 with the same manual of arms as the 1911.

I have a Browning 1911-380 Great EDC and hits where you point it.
That's a 60 year old serape bought by my mom on Olvera Street in Los Angeles.
Just out of curiosity can I include an Enfield No. 2? It is still in the original 38/200. So it's in the same category as the .38 spl. and .380., more or less. For that matter can we include .38 S&W revolvers?

I prefer what I intimately know and what I am intimately comfortable with. Being wide awake Vs awakened in the middle of the night, there is a distinct difference.
So D/A or S/A with a manual safety, which are you more comfortable with?

D/A revolver and a P-95 DC for a semi auto
.380 in a heartbeat. Double the ammo, of course- no one walks through 10 rounds- and I prefer it for shooting. 10 rounds all in one mag. Since this is a self-defense round I don't have to worry about range either.

I don't have a problem with guns looking well-used, I snicker when someone posts their "ready for anything" gat that looks like it's never been shot.
Forgot to answer the poll. I'd go .38, since in those chamberings I only have a Centennial Airweight and an LCP. I shoot the J better.

Interesting comments. I'm not sure how I want to answer this because I only have one gun of the required two types, an S&W M60 .38. Spl. I can cheat with the .380 as I do have a PPK/s .380 and PP in .32 ACP. The PPK/s is shy a ew rounds but I do carry it at times. I call it my Sunday go to meeting gun as it's flat and conceals well. Plus two or three more shots than the M60. One magazine in the gun and three more in my pockets. Ammo is a Federal Plus P 95 gr. HP that shoots very well in the PPK/s. FWIW, the .32 ACP is sometimes a back up for the PPK/s. Normal daily carry is a Colt Commander .45 ACP with two spare mags and the S&W M60 as the BUG.

Well nobody else cared to stick to the OP's list since this thread was dug up from the past so go for it......
I'm going to post what my late father would have said.... just from his experience, or at least what he told me.... when first in Korea in 1950 he carried a little Colt 1911 in 380 but did not like it and so sold it and bought a S&W 38 and carried that while there and then for the next 60+ years....
Here's a picture of that 38, carved into the butt is Korea 1950, thru hell. It was strapped to his chest during a little skirmish at a place called the Chosin Reservoir.

While there's a certain fondness for my LCPc and the .380ACP, the internal hammer stubby has significant advantages in real world deep carry application.
-Ability to fire multiple rounds from a coat pocket.
-Reliability with large meplat solid bullets.
-Less possibility of an out of battery FTF when in contact with an assailant.
And the real answer is?......
......BOTH!
