Piston Plug Set Screw 44 Carbine adjustment?

What is the proper adjustment for the piston plug set screw for a 44 Carbine? I know that the bolt will not go all the way forward if it is screwed in too much and that the screw may come loose if it is not screwed in enough. How tight should the screw be in the threads? I got another 44 Carbine the other day, and the screw was so loose that it could fall out when I removed the action from the stock. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you for that site. It did not address or even mention the screw in question but is worth having for reference.

I don't think the piston plug had a set screw in the first run of .44 Carbines.

Yours must be from the second run (after 1975?). I'll look at my books later today and see if any mention the set screw.

Thanks. The two I have at this time are from '81 and '84. The '81 has the screw tight in the plug while the '84 I just got has the screw very loose. It was unscrewed and almost falling out when I removed the stock. It was easy to turn with my fingers and would not tighten at all unless I screwed in in so much that the slide would not go all the way forward. The screw may be worn out, and I have several on order.

From this old thread, on page 1:

When I called Ruger the women on the other end was very helpful and knowledgable, told me to take the stock off and at the end of the gas tube turn the small screw (clockwise) until the breech assembly barely started to move than back it off 1/8 of a turn.

and on page2:

...I emailed ruger
and they advised I tightenen the
set screw until slide travel was noticed
and back off 1/8...
