Picked Up a New No 1 in 30-40 Krag

Picked up a new Number 1 today. I always liked the Cabelas run in 30-40 Krag, but didn't like the price. So I was happy to see that Davidson's had a bunch of 1-A's in 30-40 Krag. Not Circassian Walnut, like the Cabelas run, but pretty nice wood.

Very nice! I scored a 303 British in the classifieds here, I'm really looking forward to it. I've got a great vintage Redfield 2 3/4x looking for a home on it. I probably won't shoot it much but its certainly not very common.

Saw those available as well. came quite close to having my brother place an order. Nice classic ol' cartridge in a classic design. 8) Just realized it doesn't fill any missing void among my current #1's. Trying hard to rationalize gun purchases now. Besides, I'm oh so very, very close to having that final void filled.
I certainly would like some reporting on this nice rifle's range performance. :)

Great job! Nothing like getting a new No.1. That is a great looking rifle. Tax time means no new No.1's until I have recovered from that. Are you going to reload for it?

Definitely going to reload for it. Already picked up some brass and dies!

Just spent a few minutes reading on Wikipedia about the 30-40 Krag history. Very interesting to read about the evolution from 30-40 Krag to the 30-03 and 30-06. In the artical it talked about 230 grain bullet and 220 grain bullets. The round held the world record for rocky mountain elk.

Great rifle!!! I didn't know they were out there! I have a Cabela's #1 in 30-40 as well as a mint #3 in 30-40... been searching for an older RMEF #1 in 30-40 (had a chance to buy one years ago, but passed. Haven't seen one since).

I checked out the link and used the "Instant Quote" and noticed there were a couple different prices based on the dealer. Did you get a better deal on your #1 than what was listed within Davidson's Instant Quote???

Perhaps our friend in Texas knows more.......Maybe a barrel cleanup and only a short uncataloged run......Remember, there were only four each of the red pad #1A and #1S, way back when and not ever cataloged.....Best you pay attention and get on this if you need one........ 8)

Think of the .30-40 as a rimmed .308. Both excellent cartridges. I think that if the War Department had got its cranium out of its rear, they would have adopted the 1899 Lee rifle (NOT the straight-pull or the Lee Enfield) in .30-40 and it would have lasted in service a long time, or at least a lot longer than the Krag in .30-40. The Spanish War problems with the Krag were the load, not the cartridge, and the conservative design of the rifle, IMO.

Don't know why a foreign design like the Krag was adopted over the Lee anyway? Still lingering prejudice against anything called "Lee"? Lots of the Army command had suffered from Gen. Lee in their youth....

Well, I hope everyone who wanted one got one... I just checked the Davidson's site, and the item has been removed. Just a couple days ago there were 23 remaining... could they be all gone now??

Have the Cabelas Special in 30-40 Krag, and the bluing and wood are spectacular.
I love the #1's, and have a few, but this one is special.
Great caliber, IMHO.
