The extractor(s) seem to be poorly designed and prone to malfunction. It appears there is a primary extractor on the right and a cartridge support on the left and neither is well made or strongly sprung. My rifle suffered several failure to extract when new and I almost got rid of it right out of the box. After a thorough cleaning, function improved but the problem recurs after far too few shots.
Now that I'm running a muffler, it's worse yet. I'm going to have to clean at least every box of ammo and maybe every 20 rounds.
I don't remember EVER having a failure to extract with my 77/17. Now, I'm wishing I'd had spent the $$ to have my spare barrel threaded rather than buying a new RAR.

Had the issue with mine when I got it. Called Ruger and sent it in. The replaced the rifle. Was a headspace issue they said. Thinking chamber was small and the brass was sticking when it expanded upon firing. Would explain why cleaning solves the issue for a while. Dirty chamber would tightening things up even more. Problem got worse for me as it got dirty as well. After about thirty rounds I needed to tap the fired case out with a cleaning rod.

Was probable less hassle for Ruger to replace the gun than pull the barrel cleanup the chamber and reinstall the barrel.

Call Ruger ask for a shipping label they will make it right.

"Call Ruger ask for a shipping label they will make it right."
That may be the final outcome but it's not going to happen for at least 3-4 months unless the problem goes from bad to totally poop. Coyote hunting time is here and the muffled RAR 17 is Grandson's favorite shooter.

I would suggest a good chamber cleaning and polishing then. Pull the bolt chuck a short section of cleaning rod in a drill go at the chamber with a 270 caliber cleaning brush. Then wrap the brush with a cleaning patch with some super fine 800 to 1200 grit polishing compound. A nice clean polished chamber with not foul near as quick.

My .17 BoreSnake finally showed up(both UPS and FedEx discontinued service 12/28/15 until weather and road conditions improved). It's darned tight (which is good) so I suspect an occasional sweep may help function. I'm getting a lot more neck/shoulder splits with the RAR than with the 77/17. Don't know if this is a factor of chamber tolerance or ammo.
