Pavlov at work

A couple years back when my Son was visiting recruiters they requested my presence since he was 17. I had to sign consent for him to take a pre-test, and for them to conduct a background check. When my Son was in another room taking the pre-test, I was at his recruiters desk talking about my boot camp days compared to hers (She had a large thick color book compared to my thin magazine style with black & white pics). There were 3 others recruiters in the office at the time alone at their desks. I saw her eyes turn left, towards the office hatch (door) and I heard "ATTENTION ON DECK"...I instinctively attempted to bolt up out of the chair and pop tall (attention). However, a couple months out from a knee replacement and a bad back almost prevented me from getting all the way up. I heard "At ease everyone" and "Good afternoon Sir"......next thing you know I'm being greeted by a Captain and a Commander, Regional Recruiting staff on a surprise visit. I couldn't help but be embarrassed and ashamed I couldn't get up....didn't seem right. It led to a great conversation about my time in the Navy compared to the current Navy.

My Son calls about three times a week. He lives in the barracks. Several times, especially in warmer weather, I can hear taps in the background. A couple times he has called me walking somewhere on base and I he would say "stand by a second Dad".....and I'd hear colors playing, picturing in my mind him standing at attention. Brings a rush of pride and a ton of memories.....

He is currently in "hurry up and wait/you will know when we know" mode waiting on his flight to GA with USNCG Bravo Co to escort Jimmy Carters casket back to DC.
