Yesterday evening I was bored and started looking through my library for something to read. I believe I have every book ever written by Patrick McManus. It's been a while since I've read any of his stories so I grabbed "A Fine and Pleasant Misery." I love the stories with old Rancid Crabtree in them. Several times I laughed til I cried. My all time favorite has got to be "The Swamp".

My favorite as well. My wife used to hate when I bought one of his books to bed, because I'd get to laughing and keep her awake. He was in Anchorage one year at the annual Bow Hunters event. I guarantee his books are way funnier reading than listening to him. But he is a nice guy. and had a great sense of humor.

Ever since I was a kid and was given reading assignments for punishment in school, I've never thought very highly of reading. Patrick McManus was an exception. I always had time to read his stories, and I looked forward to them every month. Haven't read one in years.

I have several of his books not all, great reading if you are the out door type, I also got to meet him once at a book signing in Baker City, Oregon got one of his books signed by him.

I too fall into the group of folks who used to read his columns,, AND I have all his books! (At least I think I have them all!)

I haven't read him in years but I remember when I did, he was pretty funny--right up there with say Jean Shepard and Brock Yates of Car & Driver magazine.

His Sheriff Bo Tully series is quite good. A Fine and Pleasant Misery is some of the best short stories on the outdoors ever published....I love it that his dog was named Strange...

Sounds familiar. I think I might have gotten that one when I joined some club or something...or maybe got it out of the library.

Just went through my library and found it. Turns out I'd bought it used from a library sale. Funny thing is, it's light blue. I have a mental image of owning a McManus book that's orange, so maybe I have another one too.

I've started rereading it, thanks to this thead. :wink:
