p95 vs p97

I recently purchased both a p95DC and a p97DC. I was cleaning them tonight and notice a difference.
When I rack the slide with an empty mag on the p97 the slide locks open, I push the slide stop down and all is fine, fully cocked and everything.
When I rack the slide with an empty mag on the p95 it doesn't lock open but it does fully cock the hammer.
Why is this? Which is right? why the difference?

Both should lock open on an empty mag.

There can be several reasons why the P95 isn't doing that, but basically the mag follower is not pushing up on slide lock with sufficient force to lift it.

Is this something I should send back to Ruger for repair?

The P95 is not operating correctly according to design. Call Ruger and ask to send it back..if you dont want to do that buy another magazine first (you can never have too many) and try it again. it may be a faulty mag.

Good luck and let us know how you resolve it.

Does the magazine follower seem like it's binding in the magazine? Does the slide lock move freely or is it binding? I would think this is a problem you could diagnose yourself.

dwd-Please don't take this the wrong way but the when I have a problem with a gun the first thing I look for is error on my part. I took out my P series pistol (it's a P944) out this morning & played with it with an empty magazine. It is possible to pull the slide back far enough on mine to cock the hammer without pulling it back far enough for the slide stop to engage. Are you sure you are retracting the slide fully?

Okay, the reason I post to these forums is because sometimes I forget the obvious. It never occurred to me it could be the mag. So I got out the p89DC and swapped mags. the mag from the P95 worked fine in the P89 but the mag from the P89 didn't lock the slide back either. so, I got a mag from my P85 and tried it. It didn't lock the slide back either. from this I concluded it was not the mag, it must be something in the P95, but what? I'm guessing something is wrong with the slide lock but that is just a guess. The slide lock seems to be free but might not be fitting just right.
Like I said this P95 is new to me but well worn. Maybe a trip to Prescott AZ might be in its future.
Any more ideas?

Remove the slide stop and examine the lug that the mag-follower engages.

It's possible it was damaged somewhere along the way.

Okay here is another twist: If I hold the heel of the gun(the base of the mag) down against the top of the table and rack the slide, the slide stop engages like it is supposed to, holding the slide open. ???
It must be that the mag is not seating like it is supposed to. what would cause that?

I checked the slide stop and it looks okay but I don't know exactly what it looked like originally.

Well, you're not going to believe this but, the p95 works fine now. I had it in my hand to read the serial number while I called ruger and thought I'd try the slide one more time and it worked fine and then it worked every time I tried it.
I wonder if it was just too slippery after cleaning it. It is new to me, needed a cleaning, so the first thing I did to it was give it a good soaking. now it has set a few days and the excess oil has settled out?
Thanks for every ones help anyway.

You may want to rethink this. Most weapons need very little lube to run correctly, most poly guns need almost none. A drop here, a drop there. P95 owners - how much lube you using?

I'm new here and new to Rugers. I purchased a P95 recently and asked on here about what lube to use. I came to believe from all the responses I got that it's best to clean thoroughly and apply a very tiny bit of oil to the rails. It's better to have no lube at all than to have too much.
I have to admit the first time I shot mine after cleaning and lubing it sprayed excess oil all over my glasses, lol.
