New to your group seems like a great place to learn and teach.
New to semi autos so, you will hear questions that sound dumb but thats how I learn.
Just received a p89 #315X##### how to tell if a de-cocker or safety.?
just has p89 on side. and can any damage be done by trying to field strip
with out flipping the little pc. up in mag. area. my old star did not have such an item. Ididnot try and pry it apart once it didn't work I put back to gether and found you site. And been hooked ever since. thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

If your P89 is a de-cocker model, the de-cocking lever will look like this, and it will say "de-cock only" on the slide.

The models with de-cocking safeties look like the ones in this pic.

The field stripping procedure is as follows:
1. with an empty magazine in the gun, rack the slide back and lock it.
2. remove the magazine.
3. reach inside the slide and push the extractor 'thingy' down towards the magazine well.
4. grasp the gun from the barrel with your left hand and ease the slide back until the takedown pin (also is the slide release lever) can be pushed thru so that it sticks out of the left side of the gun. (note, the slide-release/takedown pin stays in the frame, it does not come loose)
5. Slowly ease the slide/barrel assembly off the front of the gun.
6. pull the guide rod, recoil spring out of the slide assembly and remove the barrel.

Reassembly is the reverse procedure. Remember to depress the ejector doo-hickey if needed, that will hang things up when you reassemble the gun if it has popped up.

After that all you need to do is calibrate the alternating foo-foo valve and grease the exhaust bearings and you are good to go. :D

Good luck!

I love the P85 and P89 models. they just "feel" right.

As long as you didnt manage to get the slide off with the little peice flipped up their shouldnt be any damage..Ruger should make a new P-89 with SR9 sites and better accuracy.

@9isFine
I think Ruger can make something that works like the old P-series. I just can't buy the new ones with all the problems people are having.

I think if Ruger would start producing P-series again; People like me will buy and stock up. 8)

A new P89 with SR9 sights, replaceable backstraps as well as the replaceable grip panels, a slimmer profile and a better trigger. And a 10mm option.

If Ruger comes out with such a gun, I will buy TWO.

Sorry to tack this question onto this post but it seemed a reasonable place. I have searched the forum and read about the history of the p89 magazines and their appearance but this is my question. Various online retailers offer 15 rd P89 magazines usually listed as the following..... "P89 (Serial No. 304-70000 & Above)" My pistol came with 2 10 rd mags and with a serial number below 304-70000. Does this mean the magazine will not function in my pistol? Are there any 15 rd magazines that would?
Thanks in advance

You want a Ruger Catalog #P15. There is also a P15/10 if you are in a state that does not allow full caps. There were several changes made at 304-70000 one of which was the magazine design. Simply put the newer mags seat farther into the mag well which makes for a more straight line feeding of the ammo. The change was made by the thousandths. Better yet check out this old thread regarding the subject. Read Coffee Pots posts carefully. He was a long time Ruger worker/designer and his info on all things Ruger has been missed for a while now
