P89 Problem

New guy to the Ruger Forum here.

I have a P89 that is new to me. I would classify it as almost new with very little use. The problem is the hammer pivot assembly backs out when firing the pistol.

What holds the pivot assembly in place? As far as I can see it's only held in place where it folds under the right grip panel.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any recommendations?

The Hammer pivot pin is held in place by the tab that fits under the right hand grip. I would say either the tab is bent (hard to do) or the grips are not installed or fit correctly.

Never experienced this with any P pistol.. Good luck.

I'm leaning towards the grip not being just right. The tab on the pin doesn't look bent other the factory bend.

I guess my question is "Do you see the pivot backing out when you shoot and being stopped, or held in place , only by the grip?

Is there a good aftermarket grip that I can replace the factory grips with?

I like this P89. She's a solid pistol that shoots right on the target. A really good gun.

I have not experienced the problem. I have used pachmyer grips. I do not fully recall, but I think they have a reinforced area where the pivot pin tab is. I also would not lube the pin, spring tension should help keep In place. Hope helps.

ill have to take mine out tomorrow and have a look. i use the hogue rubber wrap around with the finger grooves in my p89.

ill pull mine apart tomorrow if i get time and have a look.

i have a p89 that i bought several years ago used. it was in great shape and still is. ive fed thousands of rounds through it and its shoots as good today as it did when i got it. the ruger website says according to my serial number that my gun was made in 1997. thats pretty awesome to me

The hammer etc is real easy to take apart for inspection.

Remove the plug at the bottom of the frame by pulling the pin under the grips. This allows the hammer spring and arm to fall out. then the hammer is just flopping around on the hammer pin. Slide the pin out to inspect etc. The hammer will not come out but you can look it over in the frame. If you want the hammer out you have to remove the sear etc in front of the hammer first.

Post pictures of the pin etc and maybe one of us will see something out of place.
