ow much did you pay for your first Ruger 10/22 ?

I bought my first 10/22 in 1979 in Napa California at Montgomery Wards. The price was $79.00 plus tax. The salesperson took it off the rack and handed it to me to look at. I liked the looks of it because it reminded me of a M1 Carbine. I told the salesperson I would take it. There was no magazine in it and I asked the salesperson for it. She said they remove the magazines for safety reasons. She looked and looked, but could not find it. She said she would knock off $15.00 off the price. So I paid $64.00 plus tax. On the way home I stopped at a gun shop in town that was owned by a local police officer and picked up a new magazine for $6.00 plus tax. A year later I went over to Walnut Creek a nearby town to buy my first handgun because Napa's Wards store didn't sell handguns anymore. They had two handguns I liked. A Ruger Blackhawk 357 magnum in stainless steel with a 6-1/2 inch barrel and a Smith and Wesson model 41. I don't remember the details on the Smith, but both guns were the same price. I wound up getting the Ruger for $137.50 plus tax and if I remember right, I had to wait 14 days before I could pick it up. I still own both Rugers, but have not fired either one for over 20 years. I still wonder if I should have bought the Smith model 41.

Went back in two weeks later and bought my wife a Ruger Bobcat for
. . . . wait for it . . . $39.99, also at J.C.Penny. Sold the Bobcat, with
original box, price tag and owner's manual for $200, in 1986.
Got a new Bobcat stainless about 1995(?) for $400 - sigh. The new
Bobcat is a totally SWEET shooter. 8)

Checking my records, on sale for 65 bucks in 1979. Walnut wood back then, I was selling guns at a sports store. We got the big shipment straight from Ruger. I opened around 40 boxes and picked out the nicest stock. I hated the giant groups it shot at 25 yards so I sold it 1984 for 95 bucks after Ruger went to birch stocks. I was already a master class smallbore shooter and spoiled over a good shooting gun. I had a Remington bolt model 580 sporter and a Winchester model 77 that shot damn good as plinkers. So the Ruger went.
2005 I tried a 10-22 sporter, not very happy with it's ability to hit what I aimed at even with a great scope. Put it away until 2011 and got some Kidd parts making it shoot quiet nice and now I enjoy shooting a 10-22. It out shoots my Henry golden boy.

Hi I am a late bloomer when it comes to 10-22s I have been collecting Rugers since 1978 and never owned a 10-22 until last year I always looked at them and thought they were a neat gun but I already had many 22 rifles last year I walked into a LGS and there were about 6 of them sitting on the rack and low and behold there was a first year gun looked like new so it followed me home $325 :D I love it

I have to admit I didn't get into the 10-22 until about 15 years ago. I was a solid Remington "Nylon 66" user and saw no need to change until the "LEGO gun" fad started showing up. About that time, Nylon 66's became nearly collectors' items and the kids put theirs away in favor of easier to replace 10-22's. My old Nylon sits in a tool box at the barn as the last ditch (or first response) problem solver.
I think my first 10-22 (used of course) cost $75-80 and like new ones (walnut stocked)were in the $100-125 range. I was a licensed dealer at that time, so 22 rifles came in and out of inventory regularly giving me some pick and choose or upgrade options.

I think I paid about $125 at Montgomery Ward in 1985. A year or two later I bought a used one at a gun show--a very clean 1966 in a Fed Ord wood and metal folding stock, for $100. Couple years ago I turned down $200 for that stock alone.

I am looking at my sales receipt dated Nov. 4,1968. Purchased from Sears, Roebuck and Co. $54.50 for the 10/22 also purchased 4 boxes of 22lr for 80 cents each. with tax the out the door price was 58.86. I still have it. Ah the good old days.

I saw an ad on a grocery store bulletin board for a 10-22 nib for $50. I took the ad, but didn't get around to calling the guy.
Three weeks later the ad was up again and a half hour later I had a 10-22.
This was around 1990.

I bought my first 10/22 at the Boise gun show perhaps 20 years ago. A Target model with the hammer forged bull barrel. If I remember right it was $225.

Then my second 10/22 was 10 years ago. A standard Carbine model...

But the best deal I made was a single six for $199. That was also about 10 years ago....

Hi,

Bought a Nylon 66 when I was in high school. Don't remember what year, except it was a pre-GCA68 gun with no serial number. Purchased at Sears for $49.95 plus tax. It was stolen in 1980 and I replaced it in either '81 or '82 with a 10/22. My ol' gunsmith boss charged me his price, plus $10, plus tax. I think the whole thing added up to about $105. I don't know if his $10 charge was for profit or tuition when he told me what to do with it as soon as it came out of the box if I wanted it to work (he'd already asked me a couple of times if I was sure I wanted a 10/22 before he ordered it.) Even with some pre-firing tune up work, it took two bricks of Mini-Mags to get it to "reasonably reliable" even after his lesson! Still have that rifle but never did fall in love with it like I had with the Remington.

My first 2 Carbines I got for $50 each. They were from a youth shooting program that never took off and were basically unused. The next one was a very nice Sporter I traded a S&W knife for - I paid $45 for the knife. Like a fool I sold them all. I got $675 in total but then realized my grandson needed one. I found a 50th aniv with wood stock for $150 (with 5 new brand X mags). I broke my rule of not buying any Ruger built after Bill died. I hate the plastic parts and lousy finish but it is what it is. If I come across another nice early one I'll sell the 50th.

Traded a 8 hp Briggs rot it. A friend had a lot splitter and blew the motor up . That was in maybe late 70's. Friend is gone but I still have the 1022 wouldn't trade for anything.

I purchased my first 10/22 in January 1965. It was shipped in December 1964. I paid $47.95. Still have it, and it was my first of so many Rugers, it will always be the #1 of my accumulation. Oh yes, it does have an absolutely beautiful REAL walnut stock ! !

Bought my deluxe sporter from a gun shop in Washington, Iowa in the winter of 1968 for $65.00.
Beautiful walnut and checkering on it, Ran like a top then [and still does] , and the best part is it's still in my gun safe. My nephew will be the proud owner some day.

The op asked a question that has no meaningful answer. What did you pay for your first car? If replies take in the real facts of inflation and "purchase as a percent of paycheck" etc, we might get a better picture of real cost?

Just because I paid less than $60 is comparatively meaningless, as today that money is worth $272. So any amount less than that today means value has dropped. ???

My Dad bought my first 10/22 for me in 1967.
Some collector wanted to give me Big Bucks for it because it is a duplicate serial #!
My second 10/22 is a 1989 - it is suppressed. Super quiet, like my Ruger suppressed .22 pistol.

10/22 second hand carbine in 68 for around $46. I recall the price of a new one was $56 for the longest time it seems. What I like about the 60s-70s is prices did not triple 3 times over!!
