Outrageous claims

A friend sent me an inquiry yesterday about a gun he saw at a gun show in Tn. He took a picture of the gun & description card. AND the seller claimed; "Ruger had to shred the cylinders because of a lawsuit."
I politely sent my friend a message saying the seller was full of the same stuff that comes out of the south end of a north bound bull.

The BS runs deep at gun shows. At the show I go to there's a guy who sells Pythons "in the original box". He said he found a bunch of them on EBay. I told him they were fake boxes, but he wasn't having it. (shrug)

Contender's example would be hard to beat LOL

Actually, it might be true. Perhaps the sale guy does only know about 9 other .327 guns. Maybe that is all he has ever seen. He is stating a true fact to the best of his knowledge.

I used to see a dealer set up at gun shows years ago with an obviously "restored" Miltech Kar 98 Mauser, priced at $10,000! It did look new (and just like the one displayed on their webpage!) - unless you looked a little bit harder. All matching serial numbers (because the parts had been renumbered), new aftermarket laminated stock, reblued, etc. He never did find a sucker, that I'm aware of. Whether or not he knew what he actually had or not, I have no idea.

I beg to differ.
I have seen and heard more lies and deceitful practices from people selling guns , than I ever have from a used car salesman , and I used to work at a car dealership.
I could write a book on all the lies and BS I have heard and seen from people selling guns. They are the worst.

Old advice - "Never buy a gun from a used-car salesman"

Two things I learned from my father - "If someone thinks you're a fool, don't prove it to him." and "Never buy anything from anyone who lies to you about it."

Those two have kept me from making a lot of mistakes these past 50+ years.

Unfortunately there is deception with some gun folk. A couple things I have learned is that not everyone’s definition of “original” and “complete” is the same. “Original” is the worst.

It has been an expensive learning experience.

The BS artists are always out there. They sell engraved cylinder Bearcats, brass (not brass colored) trigger guards, recessed cylinders for rimfire cartridges. Anything to make whatever sound "special".

every gun produced in the US after 1968 is rare. they are the only make, model and variation with a particular serial number none others have that SN so it is one of a kind. I can not believe some of the things I have been told about guns at shows.

If I am cleaning up a gun or covering up scratches on a stock at gun shows and someone asks what I am doing I tell them I used to work at a used car lot. Get a lot of laughs that way. BTW I DID work at a used car lot. Gun shows are the only place in my experience where so many are in one place that know so little about what they are trying to sell.

I have seen at least one seller on Gunbroker whose first word on his listing is rare, or scarce - If it is so rare, he can keep it in his own collection!

Had a local dealer always have a booth at a show. Caught him one day telling a potential sale how rare and not giving a price break when I was walking by. I had same gun and told him I'd sell mine for .... a more realistic price. Loved the look on dealers face when mine sold.

I understand all the BS artists out there, I have been set up next to a lot of them,
Every gun does have a story! The question is do you have the provenance or proof in print from a reliable source with you to back it up?
I always take my books & RENE Reference with me, any gun on my table I can prove what I tell you is fact, not BS.
The sellers & buyers that irk me are the one's who pull out their phones and do a picture or google search and think its gospel!

I may be the rare bird but I enjoy a good story, just be ready & able to back it up with provenance!
I believe Flatgate would have agreed also!

I like a good story as well as the next person. It just does not make the firearm worth more to me.

Collectors item: one of 5 million

Patina: rust

Almost unobtainable: out of production for 2 weeks or more.

Honest use: Sounds like castenetts when shook.

Some holster wear: All finish gone and has patina.

I'm losing money on this deal: remind me to call the dealership and get the heated leather seats.

Great combat accuracy: stays on a silhouette target 50% of the time at 3 yards.

Has been customized: Bubba and a dremel tool got to it after 3 beers.

I was at a gun show one time and a guy looking at my guns ask me why I didn't have a story about the gun I was showing him. I said I can make one up if you want. He said let's hear it. I said this gun was owned by a little ole preacher. He only shot it on Sundays. But at least he shot the hell out of it. He laughed and ended up buying the gun before he move on.

One gun show seller I spoke with was shocked to discover that virtually EVERY Ruger made in 1976 was that elusive Bi-Centennial Edition.

Oh yeah, and that EVERY Service Six was a POLICE Service Six and had NOT necessarily been issued as a duty weapon.
