chollo cactus, looks uncomfortable. I was visited by the cattle at the windmill yesterday and a surprisingly large number were wearing "ornaments". Dr.C

Yes sir, I've had an experience or two with them myself. Good pic.

Cholla actually leap out and throw themselves into your body, I swear they do, best thing to have in Cholla country is smoe small hemostats and some super sticky duct tape to pull that crap out of ya

I remember once when me and another kid were out camping in the Anza Borego Desert with my parents. We were getting our kicks throwing rocks at Cholla cactus trying to break it apart.

He somehow got too close to one as he threw. Can you imagine punching a Cholla cactus, which is effectively what he did? We got the big portion out with me stepping on it and wedging it between my boot and a rock.

He then yanked his hand away from it. I remember he kind of went white and got kind of silent for a bit. I think he actually passed out. He spent the rest of the camping trip picking at his hand. We stayed very well away from the Cholla after that. My five acres out here in the hills has patches of Cholla on it. I had to clear some of it recently but the tractor and the front end loader kept me at least 8 feet away from it.

We always used a pocket comb to pull the needles out. It works!

Hi,

They've been unofficially known as "jumping cholla" as long as I remember!

And, yes, a couple of encounters HAVE been memorable, to say the least... Doc said it best, "OUCH!"

There are two kinds of cholla, and one is known as "jumping cholla." They are mostly found in the Sonoran desert (think Phoenix and Tucson). They have these find, curly spines that auger in to your skin if you touch them.

The other chollas aren't jumpy, but they're still nasty. We had some in our back yard when we lived in North Central New Mexico (ABQ metro area).
