I am looking for suggestions for a good scope for my Ruger 96/44. I don't need to shoot more than 75 yards tops, so I have been thinking of maybe a Nikon 2X7 Prostaff. Does anyone have a problem with mounting a "shotgun" scope on a .44 magnum?

A shotgun scope would be fine on that rifle. I have a 96-44 and shoot 75 yards max. as well. I have a leupold 1-4x on mine and really like it--just looks good on that type of rifle with the straight objective lens tube. Also sight acquisition is very quick and handy with it on 1x--no magnification and no sights to line up--just the crosshair.

Just a great handy deer rifle. I am sad they are no longer produced. I miss the classic ideas and designs of Bill Ruger

I use a Weaver 1-3X variable..... spends most of its time on 1X. As noted by trapperon, great for quick target acquisition with both eyes open.

Good replies! I think I have a Tasco 3X9 Pronghorn scope on there now, but wanted to step up to some better optics.

I figured a slightly smaller scope would look right at home on this small lever action, and it sounds like that's the general consensus here. Thank you!

I have the Leopold 1.5-5 and redfield 2-7 for couple ruger carbines. I like them both but thinking about a trying out a low power vortex on another carbine of mine.

Keep in mind a shotgun scope may not have clicks, I found that out putting one on my No 1 in 458 Win Mag. Makes dialing in a bit difficult, but I have some fairly old rifle scopes without clicks and it can be done. Burris Timberline and Leupold Rifleman series have pretty long eye relief and come in 2 to 7X. I have a dinky Burris Timberline 4X on my 96/44 and it works fine, plenty of relief.
