Ever since the wife and I bought our house about two years ago now, we have every so often found an antique here and there stuffed somewhere. Today I found in a small corner a huge stack, at least 8 inches thick of these US Army targets. I have never seen any of these before and was wondering if anyone who had been in the military can remember these and maybe when they were used. The former owner of the house retired from the US Air Force in the 50's as a Colonel and was also a hunter safety instructor here in NY for over 40 years before he died at the age of 92.

I have seen that type of target, I believe with the same markings in the late 1950's. If I was at the farmhouse I believe I could find a few of the exact same target. Where did they come from? Dad had them, and they were what we used for .22 rimfire target practice. I always assumed they were army surplus, but it never occurred to me to ask - they were just there for us to use.

Dad also helped with some NRA instruction with .22 rimfire back in the 1950's, so they could have been part of that program as well.

I think the info on the top left corner of the target is the key to where these came from.

IIRC, the "National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice" was an organization that was something like a forerunner to the CMP.

I've got a stack of these targets that I got at a military surplus/outdoor sporting goods store in about 1988.

The stack is a lot thinner than it used to be... I've had the opportunity to ventilate a few targets in that time!

We used that same target at Boy Scout Camp Saline in NW Oklahoma all during the sixties. Shot our Mossberg and Remington trainer rifles at them
I made it a point to be on the range every second they would let me.

Shot those targets when I was in JROTC, in High School. Brings back great memories of 0600 at the rifle range, for morning practices.
