Old Tree Stumps

Something I have photographed all my life when out in the mountains of Idaho is old tree stumps. They come in all shapes & sizes & many look like they are on fire when the sun is just right. It was a little late in the day on this one but you can still see the orange color, some of them are really amazing. The gun is my trusty Single Six 32 magnum because I was grouse hunting at the time. It's wearing a set of my Holly stocks.

Old stumps have a lot of life in them from bugs and grubs to fungi. I agree they are kind of cool. I have a bunch in my yard that attract pilliated woodpeckers from time to time. When they come around they hit each one in turn leaving a pile of chips.

Old tree stumps make a great firestarter . When everything is wet you can always kick open a old fir or pine stump for dry pitch and heart wood.

Might want to change your settings to "Private" on Photobucket. That way no one can access your album and delete anything.

Stumps, fence posts and such make a good prop for photographing your 6-shooter! But please, please, please! I cringe every time I see a gun on a rock or concrete!! :shock: :?

Like Dick, I love seeing old stumps and trying to imagine what their story is. Years ago when hunting in the top of the coast range on a December cow hunt I was WAY down in a canyon and came across the neatest old stump with a huckleberry bush growing out of it. It was about 3' tall and 15"-18" in diameter and hollow with the neatest burl growths on the side. A month or so later I made the 3 hour drive back to the top of the mountain, strapped on a pack frame and a bow saw and headed down into the canyon to find that stump. Found it, sawed it off and packed that stupid thing all the way up out of the canyon on my back. I took it home, wire brushed it off and it has been a fixture in my office for the last 27 years! Just last year I cut it in half and started watching for the perfect slab to make it into a coffee table or two end tables.

Anybody ever see a ragin'-fire across a clearin'.... and then try to come up on it thinkin' it was a... camp?

Hey... one time... I called out... "Hello" to the camp. Never heard an answer. Although me and the horse was whupped... just almost dead-tired. My horse was rather lathered up... and I was almost sleepin' in the saddle... we did back off fer the remainder of the night... camped outta sight. You holler... and nobody hollers back... kinda shakes ya up some. Not a friendly situation. Could be game wardens... or U.S. Marshal's... and I don't geehaw with neither.

Only to find out the next mornin'... it was only a foxfire in a stump? Anybody ever have that..... ?

Hey Con... this'un was exceptionally bright. That... coupled with some dead-tired-wishful-thinkin'... I was totally fooled. Next mornin'... starin' down into that big stump durin' daylight... I felt like an idiot. Even my horse gave me the sideways stink-eye.
