Old Timer gets a new job

A family member called me recently and asked my advise about a "house gun that could ALSO be carried in and out from the car". If it had just been a house gun, I most likely would have suggested something like the Mossberg .410 pump my wife keeps hidden but handy. He has lived in the same major suburban area for over 25 years and the neighborhood has really gone downhill. He felt he needed something to feel safe going and coming from his drive to the door. I knew he was familiar with gun safety, so I wasn't hesitant to suggest a few different handguns. He explained that he needed to find something economical if possible. I told him I thought a Model 10 S&W .38sp might be a good choice or one of the surplus CZ 83s in .380. We discussed the pros and cons and I asked him if he would like me to be on the lookout for something. He said he needed to get his finances in order first and would let me know.
As some of you know, I have tried to reduce my inventory to just what I personally shoot these days. After thinking on the situation a few days, I thought of an old Colt Police Positive .38sp I have tried several times to sell. It is tight as a bank vault and perfectly timed with a great bore, but looks like someone stored it in a tackle box with five jars of pork rind with loose lids.
I loaned it to him. A great old timer now has a new job and may live another 100 years.

Hi,

It's hard to imagine finding a place where one might NOT ever need a gun in such circumstances... that old "Stuff like that doesn't happen here" comment holds no water today. Even in the "best" neighborhoods. I hope that old Colt lives an uneventful life in its new home.

Gollee Mr. Dillon, if I lived in a safe neighborhood, all my guns would be unloaded, boxed and locked in a safe. Also, police wouldn't need to drive thru occasionally and I could leave my house doors unlocked all of the time

In a perfect world, yes. But we don't live in a perfect world, and sometimes it is not possible to move.

This may surprise people but bad things can happen even in good neighborhoods. They have this new fangeld thing called cars that let bad guys cruise into areas where people have stuff they can steal. Couple of years ago here a bad guy broke into a very nice neighborhood home where a family of three had a history of being very generous in the community. They were beat to death by this punk because somehow he was sure there as a LOT of money in the house. Too bad they didn't have a gun handy.

Thanks guys for the kind words. It seemed an easy solution for the time. It happens that the two of them in the house are able to work only part time each due to their health. On top of that the city re-evaluated the home last year at one half its previous value. All due to the decline in the neighborhood. With that, moving would be very difficult. Jim
